Shire of Murray CEO Dean Unsworth has been named the winner of this year’s Peter Chaffey Economic Development Australia Leadership Award.
The accolade was awarded at the Economic Development Australia’s Awards for Excellence this month, which recognise outstanding leadership and contribution to the economic development profession, including driving innovation, change and positive outcomes for communities.

Under Mr Unsworth’s leadership since 2007, the Shire of Murray has secured significant government investment and delivered projects with national and international recognition.
He has overseen the national award-winning and acclaimed Food Innovation Precinct WA, the award-winning revitalisation of Dwellingup as a premier tourism destination, and the restoration of the historic Exchange Hotel in Pinjarra.
Shire president Douglas McLarty said Mr Unsworth’s leadership had transformed the way the shire approached regional development, creating a bold, forward-thinking and high-performing organisation.
He said that just as importantly as delivering these projects, Mr Unsworth had also invested in Murray’s people, building a strong culture of leadership, accountability and continuous improvement.
“Dean is a strategic thinker, an exceptional advocate and a values-led leader who remains deeply connected to our community,” Mr McLarty said.
“This award is a wonderful recognition of his contribution to Murray, the Peel region and the broader economic development profession.”
Mr Unsworth said he was humbled to be recognised for work that included the broader shire team, councillors, community and businesses working together to build Murray’s economic future.
“It’s a great honour to receive this award, but it really reflects the collective work happening across the Shire of Murray,” Mr Unsworth said.
“There is enormous potential in this region, and our focus is on creating the conditions for businesses to grow, attracting new investment and making sure Murray is well positioned for the opportunities ahead.”
