The Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, has welcomed the listing of the Armed Forces College of Medicine and Health Sciences (AFCOM-HS) on the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board portal for the 2026/2027 academic session.
Alausa described the development as a milestone in President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at strengthening education, healthcare delivery and national security.
Established to develop specialised medical personnel for the Armed Forces, AFCOM-HS is preparing to admit its pioneer cohort of 100 cadets.
Located within the 68 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital in Yaba, Lagos, the college has secured approval from the National Universities Commission to offer Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) and Nursing Science (B.NSc.).
In a statement issued by the Federal Ministry of Education’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade, Alausa said the institution would provide specialised training for doctors, nurses and other health professionals to address critical manpower needs.
He said the college would combine medical education with military officer development, equipping cadets with clinical competence, professional ethics and leadership skills to improve healthcare for military personnel and strengthen national health security.
The minister described AFCOM-HS as a pioneering institution designed specifically to train military cadets in medicine, surgery, nursing and related medical disciplines.
He said its establishment also reflected the implementation of the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI), which supports the Federal Government’s education reform agenda.
Alausa commended the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa, and the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Muhammad Matawalle, alongside the Armed Forces leadership and the technical working group chaired by Brigadier General Dr Idris Babatunde Solebo.
He also acknowledged the contributions of the NUC, JAMB and relevant professional regulatory bodies to the college’s establishment.
The minister reaffirmed the Federal Ministry of Education’s commitment to academic oversight, quality assurance and regulatory collaboration to ensure the institution meets required educational standards.
Prospective applicants have been advised to consult official AFCOM-HS and JAMB channels for details on eligibility, application procedures, military selection requirements and admission dates.
