Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has been handed a 30-day suspension and fined €255 by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) after leaving the national team’s training camp in Copenhagen, Denmark, following a reported disagreement with head coach Jorge Jesus.
The disciplinary action follows an incident on September 30, when the 41-year-old forward departed Portugal’s camp ahead of the team’s Nations League fixture against Denmark. The decision came amid growing tensions over his role in the squad and the handling of an agreement he said he had reached with the coach concerning his participation in the team’s matches. Blueprint reports
Ronaldo’s departure triggered disciplinary proceedings by the FPF, which initially imposed a preventive suspension while the case was being investigated. The federation’s disciplinary authorities subsequently determined the punishment, according to reports published on Monday.
The former Real Madrid and Manchester United forward had acknowledged that leaving the camp was a serious decision and accepted that his status as national team captain required him to set an example for his teammates.
Dispute with Jorge Jesus over playing time
The controversy began during Portugal’s recent international window, when Ronaldo was left on the bench for the team’s match against Norway despite warming up for an extended period.
Portugal won the encounter 2-1 in Oslo on September 27, but Ronaldo was not introduced into the game. The forward was reportedly unhappy because he believed the arrangement he had discussed with Jesus would see him feature in the opening match of the international window and the final fixture played at home, while being rested for the away matches.
In his subsequent explanation, Ronaldo said Jesus had asked him whether he was capable of playing for approximately 30 minutes against Norway. He said he had indicated that he was ready, but ultimately remained an unused substitute.
The decision reportedly left him frustrated, particularly because he believed there had been an understanding about how his participation would be managed.
Tensions increased ahead of Portugal’s next fixture when Jesus addressed the matter during a press conference. Ronaldo subsequently felt that the coach’s public comments differed from what they had discussed privately.
The disagreement escalated into a dispute over trust, communication and the treatment of a player who has captained Portugal for many years.
Ronaldo leaves Copenhagen camp
On September 30, Ronaldo left Portugal’s training camp in Copenhagen, where the team was preparing for its Nations League engagements.
The FPF confirmed his departure but initially offered no detailed explanation for the circumstances surrounding it. The federation said preparations would continue with the remaining 24 players in the squad, stressing that the team remained focused on its forthcoming commitments.
Ronaldo later announced that he had spoken with FPF president Pedro Proença before leaving the camp. He also indicated that he would explain the circumstances behind his decision to the Portuguese public in due course.
His departure drew widespread attention because of his standing within the national team and the timing of the incident, which came shortly before an important fixture.
The incident also raised questions about discipline within the squad, the relationship between the captain and the new coaching leadership, and how disagreements involving senior players should be handled.
Federation opens disciplinary proceedings
The FPF’s Disciplinary Council formally opened proceedings against Ronaldo following reports concerning his departure from the national team camp.
On October 10, the federation announced that the case had been classified as urgent and that a preventive suspension had been imposed while the investigation continued. The matter was referred to the federation’s Disciplinary Investigation Commission.
The initial suspension was a precautionary measure pending the outcome of the proceedings, rather than the final punishment.
The disciplinary case focused on whether Ronaldo’s decision to leave the camp without an accepted justification amounted to a breach of the federation’s regulations governing players called up to represent Portugal.
The relevant disciplinary provisions provide for suspension when a player abandons or unjustifiably fails to attend national-team training, matches or other activities connected with representing the federation.
The eventual 30-day suspension and €255 fine followed that process, according to reports published on October 19.
Captain accepts responsibility and apologises
In a lengthy statement explaining his decision, Ronaldo apologised to his teammates, the national team and the Portuguese public for the manner in which he left the camp.
He also accepted responsibility for his actions and acknowledged that the incident could carry disciplinary consequences.
Ronaldo explained that his position as captain carried obligations beyond his performances on the pitch. He said he understood the importance of setting an example and was prepared to accept the punishment imposed by the federation.
The forward also made clear that his departure should not be interpreted as an announcement of retirement from international football.
He said he remained available to represent Portugal after serving the suspension, provided he was physically fit and performing well for his club.
His response has helped establish that, despite the disagreement with Jesus, he has not formally withdrawn from the national team.
Future with Portugal remains in focus
The incident has nevertheless raised questions about Ronaldo’s relationship with Jesus and the extent to which the two can move beyond their disagreement.
Jesus has maintained his authority over team selection, while Ronaldo’s account centres on what he considered a breakdown in trust following their private discussions.
The coach’s decisions over playing time remain a technical matter, but the episode demonstrates how communication between a manager and a senior player can become a wider disciplinary issue when expectations are not aligned.
Ronaldo’s sister, Elma Aveiro, has also expressed concern about the situation, suggesting in public comments that a return to the national team could be complicated by the dispute.
However, Ronaldo’s own statement indicates that he remains willing to play for Portugal, subject to his fitness, form and the completion of the disciplinary process.
The suspension is therefore a punishment for the circumstances surrounding his departure, not an announcement that his international career has ended.
For Portugal, the immediate challenge is to maintain focus on its competitive commitments while the captain and coaching staff work through the fallout. For Ronaldo, the episode represents a difficult moment in a career defined by extraordinary achievements, but also one in which his responsibilities as a senior international figure have come under renewed scrutiny.
The 30-day suspension and €255 fine bring a formal disciplinary consequence to the incident. Whether the dispute has lasting implications for Ronaldo’s place in the national team will depend on what happens when he becomes eligible to return and how he and Jesus manage their relationship going forward.
