Colombo, Oct. 19 (Daily Mirror) - Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has announced the formation of a community-based organisation to investigate the killing of the tusker Kavantissa and protect Sri Lanka’s elephant population and biodiversity.
The initiative, named the ‘Kavantissa Elephant Protection Organisation’, was launched following a discussion held at the Opposition Leader’s Office with civil society representatives and individuals concerned about wildlife and environmental conservation.
Premadasa said several proposals aimed at strengthening elephant protection were presented during the meeting.
He said he would take steps to bring the proposals to the attention of Parliament and the Government in the future.
The initiative aims to address the killing of Kavantissa while promoting the protection of elephants, other wildlife and the country’s biodiversity.
