Gangtok, Oct 15: The Sikkim University Students’ Association (SUSA) has urged the competent authorities and the Government of Sikkim to reconsider the appointment of Dushyant Kumar Gautam as the state’s Governor, citing public concerns over allegations linked to the 2022 murder of 19-year-old Ankita Bhandari in Uttarakhand.
In a statement issued on Thursday and signed by SUSA President Debyakarsh and Joint Secretary Krishnakr. Bohun, the students’ body called for the appointment to be reconsidered until the relevant allegations are examined and the status of the investigation is clarified.
Gautam was appointed Governor of Sikkim on October 12, 2026.
According to SUSA, audio clips involving Urmila Sanawar, who is associated with former BJP MLA Suresh Rathore, have purportedly linked Gautam to the unidentified “VIP” mentioned in connection with the case.
The association acknowledged that Gautam has strongly denied the allegations, termed them baseless and initiated defamation proceedings. It also clarified that the allegations have not been established in a court of law.
However, citing demands for transparency, questions raised by Bhandari’s family over call detail records (CDRs) and reports of further CBI investigations into the alleged “VIP” angle, SUSA expressed concern over appointments to high constitutional offices amid unresolved public allegations.
In its statement, the association urged the authorities to reconsider the appointment until the relevant issues are examined by competent agencies.
“In view of these concerns, SUSA respectfully urges the competent authorities to reconsider the appointment of Shri Dushyant Kumar Gautam until the relevant allegations have been thoroughly examined and the status of the investigation has been clarified,” the statement read.
The association said its appeal was made in the larger public interest and in solidarity with Bhandari’s family in its pursuit of justice.
SUSA reiterated its commitment to justice, transparency and the rule of law, stressing that allegations must be investigated impartially through due legal processes and should not be treated as established facts without judicial determination.
The students’ body also urged the public and the Government of Sikkim to remain informed and exercise due diligence regarding the backgrounds and public records of individuals appointed to high constitutional offices.
