Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts went approximately 36 hours without sleep on doctors’ orders before playing against the Jacksonville Jaguars in London — just over a week before his season-ending blood clot diagnosis was announced.
NFL insider Tom Pelissero revealed the detail on X on Monday, October 19, explaining that the 28-year-old had been instructed to stay awake as a medical precaution after doctors discovered a superficial blood clot in his left calf.
“How committed is Jalen Hurts to football?” Pelissero wrote. “After initially being diagnosed with a superficial blood clot in London, doctors told him not to sleep as a precaution, so he had been awake for roughly 36 hours when he started against the Jaguars, throwing for 220 yards and a TD.”
Despite going without sleep, Hurts started the October 11 game, completing 21 of 40 passes for 220 yards and one touchdown in the Eagles’ 19-17 defeat.

Pelissero’s revelation came on the same day that the Eagles and Hurts’ agent, Nicole Lynn, released a joint statement confirming that further testing had revealed a more serious condition.
“Jalen was initially diagnosed by specialists in London with a left calf superficial vein thrombosis,” the statement read. “After further testing and monitoring, the current diagnosis is a deep vein thrombosis, as well as bilateral pulmonary emboli.”
The latter condition means blood clots have been found in both lungs.
The team confirmed that Hurts is clinically stable and will undergo treatment with blood thinners, ruling him out of contact activities, including football.
The medical scare began after Hurts was cleated in the calf during Philadelphia’s October 4 game against the Los Angeles Rams.

According to an earlier October 15 statement from the Eagles, doctors in London reviewed an ultrasound showing a superficial blood clot and determined that Hurts could safely play against Jacksonville.
However, a follow-up examination revealed movement in the clot, prompting the team to sideline him.
Despite the diagnosis, the Eagles and Lynn remain optimistic about his recovery. “Jalen’s prognosis is very good, and we expect a full recovery,” Monday’s statement continued. “We anticipate that he will have the opportunity to resume contact football activities when off the blood thinners.”
Hurts is expected to miss the remainder of the 2026 NFL season while undergoing treatment, although the team anticipates no long-term effects from his condition.
