Mike Vrabel has spent years challenging officials from the sidelines, but the New England Patriots head coach appears to be discovering that speaking his mind could now carry consequences extending well beyond a 15-yard penalty.
Following New England's 30-24 defeat to the Chicago Bears, Vrabel was offered another opportunity to question the officiating after offensive tackle Will Campbell was flagged for a controversial false start.

Boston Herald reporter Doug Kyed asked whether the coach had reviewed the play, which appeared questionable because Campbell showed little obvious movement before the snap.
Rather than dispute the decision, Vrabel offered a revealing explanation for his reluctance to comment.
"I don't know. I'm not in very good favor with the officiating department, so I probably shouldn't say anything," Vrabel said.
His unusually cautious answer followed reports that the NFL had imposed a substantial financial punishment over his previous behavior toward officials.
According to Sports Illustrated, Vrabel was one of three NFL head coaches handed $250,000 fines for their treatment of game officials.
Nick Sirianni of the Philadelphia Eagles and Aaron Glenn of the New York Jets reportedly received identical punishments.
However, the fines are being held in abeyance, meaning the coaches may avoid paying them if their conduct improves.
Vrabel's most notable confrontation occurred during New England's Week 4 victory over the Buffalo Bills, when he disputed a defensive holding penalty against cornerback Marcus Jones.
The exchange resulted in an unsportsmanlike conduct flag against the Patriots coach, who later acknowledged using inappropriate language.
"I probably shouldn't have swore, but I can tell you that in my history of being on the sidelines as a head coach, I've said that," Vrabel explained afterward.
"And I apologized to him. It was unfortunate, and I have to be better in those moments."
Referee Bill Vinovich subsequently explained why officials had considered the confrontation serious enough to warrant an immediate penalty.
"When you use language like that, it's pretty much a given," Vinovich said.
Patriots coach shows different side
Although Vrabel avoided criticizing Thursday's officiating, he remained willing to explain one unusual coaching decision that initially appeared to be another costly penalty.
With Chicago facing third-and-inches late in the fourth quarter, Vrabel instructed defensive lineman Cory Durden to deliberately jump offside.
The decision handed Chicago a first down but preserved valuable time, allowing New England to use its remaining timeouts on the following series.
"For the record, we told Cory to jump offsides on third-and-six inches," Vrabel explained after the game.
"We felt like that was going to be the best way to get them stopped, and that's on me, so our guys executed. And Cairo made a huge kick."
Why Vrabel may think twice
The strategy ultimately failed to produce a comeback after Bears kicker Cairo Santos converted a career-long 58-yard field goal.
However, Vrabel's deliberate penalty demonstrated that he remains prepared to make unconventional decisions when the situation demands them.
His approach to officiating appears to be changing, particularly while the reported fine remains unresolved.
The Patriots coach hasn't suddenly become less competitive, but his latest response suggests he recognizes that another confrontation could prove considerably more expensive than expressing frustration from the sidelines.
