Popular Korean YouTube livestreamer Kagwang, who has approximately 470,000 subscribers, is facing intense backlash over allegations that a woman was subjected to disturbing treatment during his livestreams, with viewers allegedly paying to influence what happened to her.

The controversy erupted after a lengthy statement from an individual claiming to be the woman’s legal representative began circulating online. According to the statement, the woman, born in 1995 and suspected of having an intellectual disability, had allegedly endured months of mistreatment while participating in Kagwang’s content, including during a recent trip to Thailand. The individual claimed that the woman was recovering from hip replacement surgery when she was subjected to physical and verbal abuse, forced alcohol consumption, sleep deprivation, and financial exploitation.

The allegations included particularly disturbing descriptions of the broadcasts from Thailand. According to the statement, the woman’s crutches were allegedly broken despite her recent surgery, and she was prevented from eating because viewers had paid for a donation-based restriction on food. The woman reportedly pleaded to be allowed to eat because her medication was upsetting her empty stomach. When she allegedly took a bite of a mango out of hunger, she was subjected to further verbal and physical mistreatment.
The individual also claimed that the woman had been prevented from sleeping, forced to consume alcohol, and threatened when she expressed a desire to return home. The accusations extended beyond the broadcasts themselves. The writer alleged that more than ₩20 million KRW (approximately $14,000 USD) had been taken from the woman through arrangements involving appearance fees and viewer donations.

The statement further claimed that the woman requested help on October 21, prompting the alleged representative to contact the South Korean Embassy in Thailand. According to the writer, embassy officials intervened the following morning and placed the woman under protection, with arrangements reportedly made for her to return to South Korea on October 23. The individual also threatened legal action against Kagwang and other broadcasters over allegations, including abuse, coercion, confinement, and assault.
However, neither the individual’s credentials as a lawyer nor the allegations themselves have been independently verified. The woman’s alleged disability and the reported embassy intervention also remain unconfirmed. The woman was already a recurring presence in Kagwang’s content, having appeared in numerous broadcasts before the controversy. In earlier appearances, she appeared to participate willingly in the channel’s provocative entertainment format, making the nature of her participation and the boundaries of her consent central points of dispute.
On October 24, Kagwang issued a lengthy statement denying the allegations. The following day, he released a video addressing the controversy, maintaining that the woman had voluntarily participated in his broadcasts and signed an agreement outlining the activities, penalties, and revenue-sharing arrangements.
He also shared the alleged contract as part of his explanation. Kagwang disputed claims concerning the woman’s intellectual disability, stating that she had no history of being diagnosed with such a condition. He also claimed that he and other participants had experienced difficulties during the broadcasts. While acknowledging that he should have exercised greater care with the provocative content and promising improvements, he denied abusing the woman.

However, the explanation did little to quell the controversy. A post discussing the accusations on the Korean online community theqoo attracted more than 80,000 views and hundreds of comments, with netizens expressing horror over the alleged treatment. Many questioned whether a signed agreement could justify the activities described in the allegations. Others were particularly disturbed by the apparent role of viewers who allegedly sent donations to encourage the treatment.
- “Just thinking about people who believe they can do anything because it’s a broadcast, and others who laugh along while believing watching isn’t wrong, gives me chills.”
- “It’s horrifying that this was allegedly done to someone vulnerable who couldn’t defend herself. It’s heartbreaking.”
- “How is something like this not getting shut down?”
- “Why does YouTube even allow something like this to be broadcast?”
- “The people donating money during those broadcasts are seriously disturbing.”
- “How can something like this even exist? Everyone who paid to participate in the abuse should be held accountable and compensate the victim.”
Some netizens also directed their anger toward YouTube, questioning how such content could be livestreamed and whether viewers who financially supported the alleged mistreatment should face consequences. Despite Kagwang’s repeated denials and his insistence that the woman consented to participating, the controversy continues to raise questions about the responsibilities of content creators and the limits of consent in extreme livestream entertainment.
The allegations remain disputed, and no independent determination of criminal wrongdoing has been established.
