The Shanghai Grand Opera House opens this weekend, marking an important moment for the Chinese city, which now welcomes an important new cultural destination into its folds; and set in a linear arrangement along the Huangpu River, the new venue does not disappoint. The building was conceived to bring together state-of-the-art performance, sculptural architecture and a green, walkable public realm – and so it does, to a design by renowned Norwegian architecture studio Snøhetta.

The building sits on a spacious, clean plot, looking out towards the river and city, placed within a park that is free and open to all. Snøhetta, whose past landmark projects include the lauded Oslo Opera House and its innovative, accessible roof woven into the city's waterfront, pulled out all the stops to craft a building that embraces its surroundings in a similar way here. The structure ducks and twists, bowing to the city and touching the ground to invite visitors in and onto its roof, which extends out like a viewing platform or promenade.
Underneath, the roof curves, responding 'to the ebb and flow of the Huangpu River,' the architects explain, while unifying everything underneath - from restaurants and circulation to education spaces and auditoriums. 'The roof becomes a stage, an observation deck, and a gathering place accessible throughout the year, strengthening a sense of shared ownership. A spiralling staircase connects the ground and roof, framing views towards the river and skyline, turning movement itself into a defining part of the public experience,' they add.
Inside, the Opera House spans a generous, roughly 146 sq m surface, incorporating three auditoriums (for a total of 4,200 seats), designed to accommodate anything from traditional opera to classical music and more experimental and contemporary productions.
The building is predominantly white, kept clean and minimalist, glowing against the region's warm sun. Therefore, the bold red-accented volumes in the main lobby and circulation space playful 'pop', as the expansive facade glazing allows plenty of natural light in. These features perhaps nod to the deep red of traditional theatre boxes - but the volumes' arrangement was designed to follow modern acoustic principles in order to ensure the best possible environment for the performances and overall venue functionality.
Meanwhile, the three auditoriums were each designed to have their own character. The colour palette used in each one subtly changes, transitioning from darker to lighter tones (from bigger to smaller). This not only establishes a gentle hierarchy among them, but also highlights each venue's distinctive character.
Each of these stages - titled Harmony Hall, Soar Theatre and Open Stage - is fine-tuned for acoustics and other technical requirements. Beyond 21st-century performance mod-cons, though, they also provide a visual feast through their carefully calibrated tiered seating, built-in flexibility and emphasis on ensuring the audience feels as close to the live programme as possible.
The aim, the architects stress, is to approach performance architecture as 'an open typology' - a space that belongs to all and to the city, rather than something exclusive and reserved for expensive-ticket holders only. With the new Shanghai Grand Opera House, Snøhetta explain that they used learnings from past successes with works such as the Oslo Opera House, and translated them to the specific site and audience in the bustling Chinese port city.
The studio writes: 'Beyond its role as a venue, the Opera House creates a shared framework for artistic expression and civic life. Its stages support world-class performance, while its public spaces carry the experience of culture beyond the auditorium and into the everyday life of the city.'
