Friday brings heavy showers and thunderstorms to São Paulo, with about 40 mm forecast and wind gusts of 40–50 km/h. Pack a proper umbrella and keep plans indoors.
Today’s headline is a culture-first Friday: MASP, the Pinacoteca and Japan House are all open, with Japan House free and the Pinacoteca free only tomorrow.
The market mood is cautious: US retail sales rose 0.8% and producer prices 1.3% in September, and the board above carries every settled figure.
Your day in one line: stay indoors, pick one museum on Paulista, and keep dinner within a block of your door.

What to See & Do
FRIDAY IN SÃO PAULO
TODAY’S PICK — CULTURE OUT OF THE RAIN
Japan House São Paulo, then a slow walk down Paulista
Start at Japan House São Paulo on Avenida Paulista, which is free to enter; check its opening hours before you go. It sits near the Trianon-Masp metro station on Line 2 Green, and no ticket is needed.
This is not a huge museum, so give yourself an unhurried hour. It is the precise opposite of a rushed gallery visit. You can then decide whether the weather allows a short walk along Paulista’s shaded central spine.
If the storm passes, a short walk along Paulista works; otherwise stay inside.
After Japan House, MASP is practically next door. It is open today from 10am to 9pm and costs R$85 (about US$17), with free entry from 6pm to 9pm on Fridays and all day on Tuesdays; booking is required.
If you prefer a free art afternoon, save MASP for Tuesday and use today for the Pinacoteca, which costs R$40 (about US$8) and is free on Saturday.
OUTDOORS — PARK BEFORE THE CLOUDS
Ibirapuera is a poor choice today
Parque Ibirapuera is mostly open-air, and with storms forecast all day it is not a day for the lake loop. The MAC USP museum in the park is a safer option.
If you go, avoid open lawns and trees during thunderstorms.
Check opening hours before you go, as parks can close during storm alerts.
COFFEE & WHERE TO WORK — PINHEIROS
Strong wifi and a quiet table before the weekend
Pinheiros is a good base for a laptop day, with many cafés offering wifi and counter seating. Check each café’s hours, as Friday schedules vary.
In heavy rain, pick a café within a short walk of your metro stop.
Arrive early for the best seats, as cafés fill up when it rains.
THE CONTRASTING PLAY — CENTRO AT GROUND LEVEL
Mercadão lunch and a fast downtown loop
Mercado Municipal in Centro has free entry and is indoors, which suits a stormy day. Go for the mortadella sandwich, but keep your phone zipped and watch your bag near the surrounding streets.
From Mercadão, Farol Santander is a short walk and offers a downtown view. Check its hours and prices, and skip the viewing deck in a storm.
This is the opposite of a leafy Paulista morning: loud, dense and real. Do it if you want the working city rather than the polished one.
TONIGHT, AFTER 7 PM
Dinner in Vila Madalena, music if the rain holds
For dinner, Vila Madalena gives you the most choice in a small area, including botecos along Rua Fidalga for lighter petiscos.
Live music around Vila Madalena tends to start after 9 pm. Check door times when you arrive; many venues are small and keep irregular Friday schedules.
Pinheiros is the calmer alternative. Grab a drink at a corner bar on Rua dos Pinheiros and avoid the Vila Madalena crowd.
If the rain falls heavily, stay within one block of your restaurant choice and keep taxi apps close.
ALSO ON TODAY
MASP — Avenida Paulista — Friday 10am to 9pm, R$85 (about US$17), free Friday 6pm to 9pm and all day Tuesday
Pinacoteca de São Paulo — Luz — R$40 (about US$8), free on Saturday
Mercado Municipal — Centro — free entry
04
Getting Around
TRANSPORT
Friday’s rodízio applies to petrol and diesel vehicles from 7am to 10am and 5pm to 8pm in the expanded centre. Today’s restricted plates end in 9 and 0.
Check the Metrô status before you travel, as storms can disrupt services. A single journey costs R$5.40 (about US$1.06).
Use the Metrô’s Paulista and Consolação stations for Japan House and MASP; avoid driving into Centro during the evening rodízio window.
05
Where to Eat
LUNCH & DINNER
Lunch: For Mercadão, order the classic mortadella sandwich, big enough to share. If you stay in Pinheiros, a bowl and an espresso at a local café works well.
Dinner: A full feijoada in Vila Madalena makes a hearty indoor meal. For something smaller, try pastéis and a caipirinha at a boteco on Rua Fidalga.
06
Practical Info
GOOD TO KNOW
Carry your umbrella, a light jacket, and enough cash for Mercadão and botecos. Pix is widely accepted, but street stalls may be cash or card only.
For popular restaurants in Vila Madalena on a Friday, book or arrive before 7 pm.
One specific safety note: stay aware on the streets directly around Mercado Municipal after 3 pm, especially with your phone out.
07
Community & Lifestyle
FOR NEWCOMERS
Digital nomads in São Paulo often organise through WhatsApp groups for Pinheiros and Vila Madalena.
For a structured welcome, check Meetup and InterNations listings for Friday events.
Registration is often required, and storms may cancel or move events.
08
Game Day
THE WEEKEND ROUND
No major football fixture is confirmed for tonight in São Paulo. The big clássico weekend is not on the verified list.
If you want sport anyway, call ahead to a sports bar before heading out.
For national team or Formula One sessions, check bar listings in advance.
The day’s football is outside the city: Mirassol host Internacional in the Série A at 8 p.m., in the interior of São Paulo state.
09
Business & Markets
WEEK IN FIGURES
US retail sales came in stronger than expected, and producer prices rose. That has split the mood — resilient consumer demand, but still-hot inflation.
Treasury yields fell and the dollar weakened on Thursday. The board above carries every settled figure.
For expats, the takeaway is caution rather than alarm. Brazilian markets are closed over the weekend, so no local price action until Monday.
