Lena Dunham is officially bringing New York's most dysfunctional millennial friend group back together for five brand new episodes of Girls. But why now, and what are the Girls characters doing with their lives in 2027?
“We always said we would only return to Girls if there was a specific story we were burning to tell,” Dunham said in an HBO press release on October 13. “I’ve missed these characters, but for a long time I couldn’t quite picture them in the present day. Then, right around my 40th birthday, they started talking to me in the shower.”
Luckily for legions of Girls fans, Dunham's former co-stars Allison Williams, Zosia Mamet, Jemima Kirke, and Andrew Rannells were all on board to start filming new episodes next summer. Unfortunately, that means we'll probably have to wait at least a year for the revival to actually air.
While we wait, fans are already casting bets on what Hannah Horvath, Marnie Michaels, Shoshanna Shapiro, and Jessa Johansson have been up to since the series finale in 2017. “Shoshanna is going to be on the Real Housewives of New York promoting her zero waste athleisure line,” TikTok user @sydneyrekaps said in one popular video, going on to predict that Marnie is divorced with a child, Jessa is the stablest one of the group, and Hannah is still teaching in upstate New York but is married—hopefully to the a man played by Dunham's real-life husband, Luis Felber.
Kaps' prediction for Shoshanna seems to come straight from Dunham's past interviews, though she seems to have missed what the series creator said about Hannah's trajectory back in 2025. “I think that Shoshana has [an] athleisure empire,” Dunham told The Associated Press at the time. “Marnie is living in L.A. making music. She's on her third husband. Jessa is on a boat in Croatia with her 80-year-old partner, and Hannah's a lesbian.”
Around the same time, Dunham shared even more details about those storylines in an interview with Variety, adding the fates of Adam (Adam Driver), Ray (Alex Karpovsky), and Elijah (Andrew Rannells) into the mix. Here's what Dunham and other cast members have said about where the main Girls characters has ended up, though their statements are obviously subject to change in the revival.

By the end of the series, Hannah is a college professor and a single mother to her son, Grover. In 2025, Dunham told Variety that Horvath is probably teaching at Bard and enjoying raising her son. “She probably has a girlfriend who’s, like, a chef,” Dunham said. “And she’s less obsessed with being famous. That is where I feel that she would land.”

Hannah's type-A roommate ended the series divorced, somewhat aimless, and back to living with Hannah in upstate New York. Years later, both Duham and Williams seem to agree that she still hasn't quite figured herself out.
“I think she’s still searching,” Williams told Vanity Fair in 2024, suggesting she's in a “sundress somewhere” on the West Coast. “She’s maybe gotten married again, and unmarried again. Maybe she’s still doing music, but it’s not really scratching the itch that she wants it to. I don’t know that she’s come to the realization yet, that all the things she needs and wants are internal. She can’t find them somewhere else. I wish that for her, but I think that might still be coming.”
By 2025, Dunham firmly believed Marnie would be on her third marriage. “She still sings, but I think Marnie really needs to take it to sex and love addicts anonymous,” she told Variety.

Shoshanna successfully untangled herself from the friend group towards the end of the series, though she ended up back in New York by the finale. In 2025, Dunham said the NYU grad ended up marrying—and then divorcing—the mayor of New York City and “runs an athleisure startup that’s zero-waste.”
Jessa Johansson (Jemima Kirke)

Jessa didn't really land anywhere specific by the end of the series, which is just par for the course for the free spirit. While it's implied that she ends up back with Hannah's ex Adam by the end of the series, it's fair to assume they aren't endgame.
“Jessa is unvaccinated and lives on a boat in Croatia,” Dunham said back in 2025 before dropping that Adam is a “cult theater actor” that's “probably living in Berlin.”

So far, Hannah's gay college boyfriend turned confidant is the only man confirmed to appear in the Girls reboot. After booking a role on Broadway in the final season of Girls, Dunham has said Elijah is “the fourth lead on a sitcom, making a good amount of money, and still looking for love in all the wrong places.”

It seems unlikely that Adam Driver will return to the series, so Berlin is as good a place as any for Hannah and Jessa's ex to have ended up.

Ray, a straight-shooting New Yorker who dated both Shoshanna and Marnie during the original series, ended up with as a city council board member who owns a successful café. According to Dunham, he's “doing better than anyone.”
Of course, it's highly likely a lot of Dunham's thoughts have changed since that shower conversation with Hannah, Marnie, Shoshanna, Jessa, and Elijah—and I, for one, can't wait to see how it all plays out.
