A 44-year-old German national, a resident of Mallorca, was arrested on Wednesday for his alleged involvement in a shipment of over three tonnes of marijuana, which was intercepted last March at the port of Valencia after arriving from Canada. He is also linked to a separate seizure of 80 kilograms of the drug in Germany. National Police investigators have additionally charged another man, a resident of the island.
He appeared before a judge in Inca on Thursday, charged with drugs trafficking and membership of a criminal organisation. He was released without bail, despite the Prosecutor’s Office requesting that he be remanded in custody. He is prohibited from leaving the island and must report to the court on the 1st and 15th of every month.
The case dates back to March 8, when authorities at the port of Valencia intercepted a container from Canada containing 3,289 kilograms of marijuana and six kilograms of hashish. The shipment was disguised as commercial goods, with a warehouse in Malaga listed as the intended destination.
The seizure triggered an investigation in Valencia. Officers analysed the movements associated with the container and gathered intelligence to identify those behind the operation. The investigation progressed further in September, when officers detected a shipment of marijuana to be sent from Spain to Germany.
The shipment was intercepted in Germany. Eighty kilograms of marijuana were seized, it having been was vacuum-sealed in bags and placed inside golf-ball vending machines.
