Real Madrid produced a remarkable late comeback to defeat AS Roma 4-3 in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, scoring three goals in seven minutes to overturn a two-goal deficit at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.
The Spanish giants appeared destined for defeat after Roma took a commanding 3-1 lead in the second half. However, goals from Carlos Espí, Endrick and Antonio Rüdiger in the closing stages secured all three points for Real Madrid in a dramatic encounter.
Roma made a strong start and took the lead in the 20th minute through Marten de Roon, whose effort from the edge of the penalty area took a deflection off a teammate and wrong-footed Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.
Real Madrid responded five minutes later when Kylian Mbappé found the net on his 100th Champions League appearance. The French forward capitalised on a defensive error by Mario Hermoso before firing a shot that deflected off Roma defender Gianluca Mancini and beat goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini.
The equaliser brought Real Madrid back into the contest, although Roma continued to threaten as both sides created opportunities before the interval.
Roma regained control shortly after the restart, with Donyell Malen scoring twice to put the hosts 3-1 ahead.

The Dutch forward restored Roma’s advantage six minutes into the second half, finishing a move that exposed gaps in the visitors’ defence. He struck again in the 58th minute, converting a through ball from Matías Soulé to leave Real Madrid facing a difficult task.
Real Madrid attempted to respond, and Mbappé appeared to have reduced the deficit when he scored again in the second half. However, the goal was ruled out for offside, delaying the visitors’ comeback.

With time running out, Real Madrid increased the pressure, and their persistence paid off through a series of set-pieces that completely changed the outcome of the match.
The comeback began in the 83rd minute when Carlos Espí reacted quickest to a rebound after Endrick’s header from an Arda Güler corner was saved by Gollini. The goal was initially ruled out for offside before a video assistant referee review confirmed it, reducing Roma’s lead to 3-2.
Two minutes later, Endrick completed the equaliser, rising above the Roma defence to head home another Güler corner and make it 3-3.
Real Madrid continued to push for a winner, and their pressure produced the decisive moment in the 90th minute. Güler delivered another corner into the penalty area, where Rüdiger connected with an acrobatic finish to send the ball into the net and complete the turnaround.
The goal sparked celebrations among the visiting players as Real Madrid transformed a 3-1 deficit into a 4-3 victory in the closing minutes.
The result also marked a memorable return to Rome for Real Madrid manager José Mourinho, who previously managed Roma and led the Italian club to the UEFA Europa Conference League title in 2022.
The victory gave Real Madrid six points from their opening two matches in the Champions League league phase, maintaining their 100 per cent record in the competition. Roma, meanwhile, remained on one point after the defeat.
