(ANSA) - LONDRA, 22 OTT - The Italian Ambassador to Ireland, Nicola Faganello, recently took part in a series of visits and meetings in County Meath as part of initiatives promoted by Ireland’s rotating EU presidency to support twinning arrangements between EU member states and the various counties of the Republic.
The program, organized by the Meath County Council, served to strengthen ties between Italy and the county through collaborations among institutions, schools, sports associations, and cultural and business organizations. It also allowed Faganello—accompanied by the director of the Italian Cultural Institute in Dublin, Michela Magrì, and the local representative of the Italian Trade Agency, Francesco Montana Paladini—to meet with Foreign Minister Helen McEntee, Minister of State for European Affairs and Defense Thomas Byrne, and the Irish Ambassador to Italy, Elizabeth McCullough. On the sidelines of the various events, Ambassador Faganello emphasized the value of the twinning between Italy and County Meath in strengthening relations between the two countries and bringing Europe closer to its citizens, while also fostering the involvement of their respective communities. He then thanked the Director of EU Grange, Eric Thevenard, for his valuable work, taking the opportunity to meet with fellow Italians in the local community. Significant attention was then devoted to education and cultural exchanges, with visits to Ratoath College—where 450 young people study Italian—and Carnaross National School. The program also highlighted historical and spiritual ties with a stop at Dalgan Park (the headquarters of the Missionaries of St. Columbanus, the Irish monk who founded the Abbey of Bobbio-Piacenza in 614); as well as sports ties, through a meeting at the Navan Rugby Club, a partner of the Piacenza Rugby Club since 2023. The culinary highlights of the Kells area were also explored through the Boyne Valley Flavors Dining Experience and a visit to Sheridan’s Cheesemongers (an importer of Italian products).
