Aliko Dangote
Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, launched a N100bn annual education support initiative through the Aliko Dangote Foundation in Lagos in December 2025.
The initiative is designed to support more than 1.3 million vulnerable students across Nigeria’s 774 local government areas. Its focus areas include scholarships in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, vocational and technical training, secondary education for girls, and teacher development.
The programme is projected to exceed N1tn in funding over 10 years.
According to Dangote, the initiative will support 45,000 new beneficiaries in its first year, with the number expected to rise to 155,000 by the fourth year and remain at that level for the next decade. The overall target is to reach 1.3 million students nationwide.
Under the scheme, 30,000 undergraduates in public universities and polytechnics are expected to benefit annually, alongside 5,000 students in technical colleges and 20,000 girls from Junior Secondary School 1 to Senior Secondary School 3.
Dangote has also pledged 25 per cent of his personal wealth to the foundation.
The initiative is expected to promote financial literacy and participation in Nigeria’s capital market. Under a proposed share ownership component, eligible students who subscribe to at least 10 shares in a Dangote Refinery initial public offering may receive funding for an additional 10 shares in their names at no cost.
Beyond the scholarship programme, Dangote has supported educational infrastructure through several donations. These include N600m for a female hostel at Lagos State University, N550m for a hostel at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, in April 2026, N1.2bn for a hostel at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and $10m for Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Kano.
