Ja’Kobi Lane is beginning to give the Baltimore Ravens reasons to get excited about his future. The rookie returned from injury against the Cleveland Browns and quickly showed why the coaching staff believes he can become a valuable piece of the offense. Even with the Ravens struggling to move the ball consistently, Lane offered quarterback-friendly routes, reliable hands, and a physical presence in the passing game.
The Ravens’ offensive coordinator, Declan Doyle, has noticed those qualities, too. His latest assessment of the young receiver was brief; it offered an intriguing glimpse into why Lane could earn a bigger role as the season progresses.

That was Doyle’s assessment of Lane, shared by ESPN’s Jamison Hensley on X on October 22. The comment captures an important quality for a young receiver: the ability to become a dependable target when a QB needs someone to throw to.
“The ball tends to find him.”

Lane showed that trait during the Ravens’ 13-10 loss to the Browns on October 18. Returning after missing several weeks with a wrist injury suffered in Week 1 against the Indianapolis Colts, the third-round pick caught four passes for 40 yards on five targets. He also tied tight end Josh Cuevas for the second-most targets on the team.
Those numbers might not jump off the page, especially in a disappointing loss; however, the wide receiver performance offered encouraging signs beyond the box score. He handled physical coverage, used his frame to create separation, and worked back toward quarterback Tyler Huntley when plays broke down.
That last detail could prove particularly valuable once Lamar Jackson returns. Jackson’s ability to extend plays often forces receivers to adjust their routes and find open space outside the original design. Lane’s willingness to make himself available could help him become a reliable option in those situations.
Doyle has praised Lane’s physical receiving ability before. During training camp, the coordinator compared the rookie’s strong hands and impressive catch radius to those of former New Orleans Saints star Michael Thomas, whom Doyle worked alongside earlier in his coaching career.
The comparison is significant, yet Lane still has plenty to prove before he can be mentioned alongside an established NFL star. Thomas recorded 92 receptions as a rookie in 2016, setting a high standard for a young receiver entering the league.
The Ravens also have Zay Flowers, Rashod Bateman, and other offensive weapons competing for targets. That crowded receiver room could limit Lane’s immediate opportunities; however, his physical style gives Doyle another option when the offense needs a dependable catch in traffic.
The Ravens’ recent offensive struggles make that development especially important. They managed just 10 points against the Browns, and Doyle will need to find ways to produce more consistently.
