There comes a time every winter when function and fashion engage in a high stakes duel. Usually, function loses - sacrificed at the altar of sleek coats and shivering ankles. But every so often, designers show mercy, and hand us a trend that is equal parts stylish and practical. Enter: the trapper hat.
Once reserved exclusively for Siberian woodcutters, polar explorers, and eccentric uncles who insist on doing their own snow shovelling, the trapper hat is back.
The moment of ignition arrived courtesy of the queen of dramatic outerwear herself: Claudia Winkleman. Stalking the foggy grounds of the Scottish Highlands on The Traitors, Claudia paired a voluminous plush black fur trapper hat with a sweeping, full length fur coat.

Meanwhile, over in Milan, Miu Miu’s autumn/winter ‘26 runway made the trapper hat a recurring feature. Miuccia Prada took the rugged outdoor staple and injected it with new life. Models marched down the catwalk sporting big fur-lined trapper hats, shiny numbers, and technical fabrics designed to disrupt smart clothes.

Of course, a Miu Miu runway is one thing; the walk to work on a freezing Tuesday morning is quite another. Thankfully, the trapper hat is surprisingly easy to work into your existing wardrobe, provided you approach it as an accessory rather than a full blown expedition uniform.
One of the easiest ways in is with a leather jacket. The contrast between fluffy headwear and smooth leather gives the whole look a slightly different feel, especially withjeans and boots. For something a little more elevated, try styling a trapper with tailored trousers, a fine knit, and a long wool coat.
If you like the sportier styles from the runway, a technical trapper hat goes brilliantly with a simple shell jacket, jogging bottoms, and trainers. Embellished or embroidered ones are great for adding a bit of character to a simple outfit. The golden rule? Let the hat do all the work.

If your wallet isn't quite ready for a Miu Miu price tag, you don't need a designer budget to keep your ears warm in style this season.
