Five Somersfield Academy students have raised $940 for Family Centre through Bermuda Gambit, a student-led chess tournament and bake sale that brought together young players from across Bermuda.
Jameson Feldman, JitHom Liew, Emma Osborne, Ana Na, and Brennan Watkins organised the second annual fundraiser on June 17, 2026. Half of the funds came from the chess tournament, with the other half raised through a student-run bake sale.
The initiative began in 2025, when the students were in M2, with the aim of using their shared interest in chess to support other children. Their first fundraiser raised approximately $700. This year’s event welcomed participants from Saltus Grammar School, Somerset Primary, Warwick Academy, and West End Primary.
Family Centre Executive Director Dr Sandy De Silva thanked the students for choosing to support the organisation’s work: “Family Centre is incredibly grateful to the students behind Somersfield Academy’s Bermuda Gambit for choosing to support our work with children, teens, and families in Bermuda.
“This completely student-led initiative is a wonderful example of youth using their creativity, leadership, and talents to make a meaningful difference in their community. We were especially touched that the students chose Family Centre because of our mission to support children.
“We congratulate Jameson, JitHom, Emma, Ana, and Brennan on another successful tournament and thank them, along with everyone who participated and supported the event, for their generosity. Their efforts will help Family Centre continue providing counselling services and therapeutic youth programmes to children, teens, and families across Bermuda at no cost to them.”
A spokesperson added, “Now in their first year of high school, the students are already planning the next Bermuda Gambit, with hopes of growing the initiative further in 2027.”
