The 7th-ranked Texas Longhorns suffered a potentially significant blow to its defense Saturday. Colin Simmons went down with an apparent leg injury against Florida early in the fourth quarter.
The two SEC teams were locked in a hard-fought battle when Simmons, one of the nation's most dominant defensive players, was forced to leave the game. He was taken to the medical tent and was ruled out.
Simmons was putting minimal weight on his right leg. We'll see during the upcoming week how serious the injury update is for the Texas star.
Entering Week 7, Simmons led the nation with 9.5 sacks and added another against Florida, bringing his season total to an impressive 10.5 through six games. His remarkable production has pushed his name up NFL draft boards. He's one of a few players who could be the No. 1 overall pick next April.
Simmons' ability to consistently disrupt quarterbacks has been a major factor in Texas' defensive success. Beyond his individual statistics, Simmons' relentless pass rush allows Texas to play more aggressively in coverage, knowing opposing quarterbacks have limited time to find open receivers downfield.
No doubt this will be a major storyline for Texas moving forward. Florida eventually pulled off the upset with a 27-24 win. The Longhorns suffered their second loss of the season after escaping defeat twice times this season.
