President Lee Jae-myung mourned a firefighter who died battling a factory fire in Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province, on the 17th, pledging to strengthen safety measures and improve working conditions for firefighters.
"I am devastated by the news of the firefighter who died in the line of duty at the Bucheon fire scene," Lee wrote on X, formerly Twitter. "I pray for the repose of the deceased."
"I will engrave deep in my heart the dedication of the deceased, who rushed into the scene at great risk to protect the lives and safety of the people," he said. "Ensuring the safety of firefighters who safeguard public safety is a duty the state must fulfill."
Lee also promised a comprehensive review of on-site safety measures and improvements where they fall short. "The government will thoroughly review safety measures and address shortcomings so that field personnel can carry out their duties more safely," he said. "We will look closely into providing recognition and treatment commensurate with the sacrifice and hard work of firefighters who devote themselves to the people."
Lee added: "I extend my deepest condolences to the bereaved family who lost a beloved family member. I also offer my heartfelt sympathy to fellow firefighters sharing in this grief."
