The Erode Corporation on Wednesday (October 14, 2026) began collecting special care waste from households as part of the implementation of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, which mandate segregation of waste at source into four categories.
The four categories are wet waste, dry waste, sanitary waste and special care waste, also known as domestic hazardous waste. Residents have been instructed to segregate waste using four colour-coded bins or bags: green for wet waste, blue for dry waste, red for sanitary waste and black for special care waste.
While wet, dry and sanitary waste will be collected daily, special care waste will be collected separately once a week, every Wednesday. Residents have been asked to hand over special care waste to conservancy workers on the designated day.
Special care waste includes expired medicines, paint and pesticide containers, compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), tube lights, batteries, mercury-containing items, household electronic waste and other notified domestic hazardous waste.
Conservancy workers collected the special care waste separately on Wednesday and transported it to the facility at Vairapalayam for further handling. The separate collection system is intended to prevent domestic hazardous waste from being mixed with regular municipal waste and ensure its safe handling and disposal.
