It was time for the S-Bahn derby on Friday evening in Munich, with the context surrounding the fixture making it even more special. The Bavarians welcomed back iconic Bayern academy coach Holger Seitz—who managed the U-23s until last summer before Dante replaced him, and is now head coach at SpVgg Unterhaching—alongside former U-16 Bayern head coach Can Ünal, who left Munich to join Seitz’s coaching staff. As luck would have it, the game even took place on Seitz’s birthday.
The Bavarians took on Unterhaching with all of their personnel returning from the international break, though they lost Bogdan Olychenko to a cold just prior. This gave Dante the chance to line up David Santos Daiber and Erblin Osmani as a double pivot for the very first time. Tim Binder, meanwhile, was not yet ready to play a full 90 minutes, and 28-year-old star striker Anton Heinz was surprisingly dropped to the bench.
The game started with a bang. Both teams’ defenses fell apart at crucial moments, leading to huge chances at both ends. The opener was scored by the Bavarians when U-23 tricky winger and summer signing Matouš Srb bamboozled his defender on the right and laid the ball off brilliantly to overlapping striker Noah Codjo-Evora, who slotted it home for his fourth goal in four games.
The match continued to be end-to-end as both sides sought to play direct football behind the opponent’s defense. Filip Pavić had an uncharacteristically error-prone game and gave the ball away in a silly manner, which saw Unterhaching miss an open goal due to poor control. At the other end, Bastian Assomo bulldozed his way through the opposition defense through sheer will and power before his ultimately tame shot was smothered by the goalkeeper.
In a way, those last two sequences exemplified the game well: Bayern had more of the ball but made too many simple mistakes, such as Pavić’s turnover, allowing Unterhaching back in. Meanwhile, Bayern’s forwards Codjo-Evora and Assomo offered very little overall, yet looked dangerous in fleeting moments.
The chances kept coming, and the equalizer arrived just one minute after Osmani hit the post with a long-range strike. Lazy defending and a lack of awareness in midfield allowed Unterhaching to pour a number of men forward unguarded, enabling Cornelius Pfeiffer to score an admittedly wonderful goal.
A 1-1 draw was how the game ended, and it was an ultimately fair result. This match did a good job of highlighting the improvements of Dante’s men since a season start marked by three defeats in four, but it also showed why they are still far from competing for the league title.
Next week is the real showstopper, though. Bayern and Unterhaching’s rivalry has lessened due to club agreements and Seitz’s move there, but animosity between Bayern and 1859+1 remains strong. Next week on Sunday, October 18, Bayern will travel to their city rivals for the first time since their matches in the 3. Liga, which included a famous win for the U-23s. Bayern will be hoping their next match goes like that and not their other three encounters.
Bayern U-19s 6-1 SSV Ulm U-19s, Matchday 6
Bayern lineup: Podar-Stiube – El-Chaar, Mijatović, Moumouni, Wijks (46′ Pucci) – Imade (59′ Afanou), Schmid, Matosevic (59′ Horoszczak), Egwuatu (59′ Maric) – Gashi (59′ Schaff), von Taube (73′ Snip).
Goals: 1:0 von Taube (5′), 2:0 Schmid (23′), 3:0 Imade (44′), 3:1 Rakk (68′), 4:1 Afanou (80′), 5:1 Snip (85′), 6:1 Afanou (86′).
Unused subs: Nadler.
Unavailable players: Matthias Kösters, Aristide Hentcho Nseke, Thibault Maspimby.
Position: 1st, 15 points.
This was possibly the least deserving 6-1 victory in existence, only rivaled by Union Berlin’s bizarre 6-1 win over Schalke back in 2022. The Bavarians welcomed second-bottom SSV Jahn Regensburg to Munich, fully expecting to wrap up the first half of the season with a routine victory. They got the win, but the manner of it was bizarre.
The visitors’ defense was expectedly meek at times. A single run and pass cut straight through the entire backline for the opening goal, while Leopold Schmid did not even have to jump to meet a corner and score the second.
However, it was the Bavarians’ defense that harmed itself the most, with two terrible errors in build-up play handing Regensburg 100% scoring opportunities that they somehow squandered. Miraculously, the game remained 2-0 as pressure mounted on Bayern’s defense, only for desperate defending to spark a counterattack that Wisdom Imade finished off to bring the score to 3-0.
It was scarcely believable that Bayern were up by three goals, but it was the moment to seize control in the second half and kill off any visitor hopes. Instead, it was Regensburg that grew in quality and confidence. They missed several more unbelievable opportunities before finally getting their goal in the 68th minute. Unable to reward their overall superiority any further, they exposed more defensive cracks that substitute Chris Afanou ruthlessly exploited. Afanou scored against the run of play, followed closely by Roy Snip’s long-range shot—which Regensburg’s goalkeeper completely dived over—and Afanou’s comical second goal.
This result not only sees Bayern end the first phase of the season with a win, but it also gives them sole possession of top spot. VfB Stuttgart’s U-19s dropped points, leaving them on 13 points and two behind Bayern. The U-19s will take on Unterhaching’s U-19s next week.
Bayern U-17s 5-1 Augsburg U-17s, Matchday 8
Bayern lineup: Röhlk – Etüz, Schreyer, Nduka, Herber (85′ Dillschneider) – Zubovic, Mujic (58′ Hoffmann), Ciglar (58′ Mahr) – Nuraj, Krasniqi (70′ Hiseni), Ludwig.
Goals: 1:0 Krasniqi (16′), 2:0 Schreyer (41′), 3:0 Etüz (56′), 4:0 Bohnengel (58′, ET), 5:0 Nuraj (76′), 5:1 Keshavarzi (77′).
Position: 1st, 21 points.
This was another very dominant victory by the U-17s. Hosting the bottom-of-the-table side to start the second half of the first phase, they struggled initially to break down a deep block. Florent Krasniqi’s opener helped, but captain Tim Schreyer’s second goal just before halftime truly opened up the visitors. Bayern could easily have reached double digits in a convincing second-half display, though they were left slightly annoyed by an unnecessary clean-sheet concession.
This victory puts Bayern’s U-17s on 21 points, five ahead of second-placed Nürnberg.
