A woman in her 40s who had been under police protection after reporting stalking and violence was stabbed to death in Jeju Special Self-Governing Province by a man wielding a knife.
The Jeju Seobu Police Station said on Oct. 12 that it had arrested a man in his 60s, identified only as A, without a warrant on murder charges and was questioning him.
A is accused of stabbing the woman, identified only as B, to death at about 1:38 a.m. that day on a street near a hotel in Yeon-dong, Jeju City.
A fled after the attack, and police tracked him down and arrested him without a warrant at about 5:08 a.m. at a location in Jeju City. In questioning that followed, A claimed that he and B had been in a romantic relationship.
B had filed multiple reports against A over stalking and violence, according to police. Police had given her a smartwatch and, judging that she faced a risk of retaliatory violence, registered her in the 112 emergency call system as a subject of safety management measures.
However, because each case was resolved at the scene when reported, no separate measures such as a restraining order were issued against A, police said. Police are investigating the exact circumstances of the case and the motive for the attack.
