U.S. President Donald Trump spoke about WNBA star Sophie Cunningham in a rally on Saturday. He said she can help teams, but not necessarily for basketball reasons.
After her comments sparked the debate surrounding transgender athletes in the WNBA, Sophie Cunningham has become something of a conservative icon in the United States. She is regularly referenced and complimented by various conservatives like Riley Gaines, Tomi Lahren, and others.
Cunningham is now an unrestricted free agent following the expiry of her one-year contract with the Indiana Fever. She has brought a lot of attention to the team, although some have suggested that it is negative attention. One fairly important person doesn’t think so, though. President Donald Trump has now shared his thoughts on Cunningham.
Donald Trump claims ‘you’d want’ Sophie Cunningham on the team, but not to score points
Trump spoke at a rally in Covelli Centre in Youngstown, Ohio on Monday, October 12. He campaigned for Republican U.S. Senate candidate Jon Husted and Ohio gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy. Celebrity boxer Jake Paul also joined him in speaking at the event.
Trump himself spoke about various topics at the rally. He addressed hot-button issues like AI, immigration, and spoke generally about the economy. While discussing these, he also found the time to get in a few words about the WNBA guard.
“I like Sophie Cunningham, I like Sophie,” Trump said at the rally. “Yeah, you have a lot of men wanting to go and watch her, she’s beautiful. You’re not allowed to say that anymore, however. As a politician, please, please, let me take it back.
“Anytime a politician says a woman is beautiful, that is generally the end of his political career in the modern day politics world. But Sophie is a beautiful young woman. You probably wouldn’t mind her on the team. Not to help you with points, but to help you with attendance.”
This is a compliment and a bit of a dig from Trump, both at the same time. While he praised Cunningham for her looks, he suggested that her on-court production isn’t what makes her valuable. The spotlight can be a double-edged sword, though, and it remains to be seen which, if any, WNBA team signs the 30-year-old next.
