A decade of championship success has earned Steve Kerr considerable trust within the Golden State Warriors organization, but even that history wasn't enough to prevent the veteran coach from questioning his future.
Following a 37-45 season that ended without a playoff appearance, Kerr seriously considered whether Golden State needed fresh leadership rather than another attempt to revive its NBA championship-winning formula.

The 61-year-old ultimately agreed to a two-year contract extension, but his explanation of the decision offered a revealing assessment of where the Warriors stand entering the 2026-27 campaign.
Golden State remains determined to compete, although Kerr acknowledged that the franchise is no longer operating with the same advantages that helped it dominate the NBA during the previous decade.
Steve Kerr questioned his Warriors future
Kerr admitted that uncertainty surrounding the team's direction extended beyond the disappointment of missing the postseason, with Golden State's aging stars creating difficult questions about its future.
"I wasn't sure if I was the right person or if they wanted me back frankly, because we're in this weird spot where we won a title in '22, we've been really competitive the last couple years, but we're clearly in transition," Kerr said.
"Our best players are older. Last year was a difficult season, 37-45, very disappointing."
Those concerns led Kerr to consider whether a coaching change might benefit both sides after 12 seasons together.
"There was part of me that felt like maybe it was time for a new voice, and maybe for them too," he admitted.
However, the relationships established during four championship campaigns ultimately persuaded Kerr that continuing together remained the right decision.
"We have such a great relationship between front office and management and coaching staff, players," Kerr explained. "So it just became an easy decision once everything clarified."
Warriors' preseason struggles highlight Kerr concerns
While Kerr's future has been settled, the challenges awaiting him have become increasingly apparent during Golden State's preseason preparations.
The Warriors have introduced several new faces, including Yaxel Lendeborg, Georges Niang and Brandon Williams, leaving the coaching staff attempting to establish cohesion before the regular season begins.
However, turnovers and poor decision-making have frustrated Kerr, who believes his players must become more disciplined as the opening game approaches.
"I haven't harped on them until now because I know we're really teaching a lot of things that are new for our guys," Kerr said.
"But now is the time. We only have two exhibition games left. We start the season a week from Wednesday."
Steve Kerr sends warning before season opener
Golden State demonstrated its potential during a recent preseason meeting with the Los Angeles Lakers, outscoring its opponents 51-26 in the second half.
Nevertheless, Kerr remained dissatisfied with aspects of the performance, particularly missed opportunities in transition and unnecessary offensive mistakes.
"Much better second half, overall, the energy and effort," Kerr said. "But we've got to execute better. We have to finish in transition, make the easy plays and we're not close yet."
The Warriors begin their regular season against Luka Doncic and the Lakers in Los Angeles on October 22, providing an immediate examination of their progress.
Kerr's commitment offers stability, but his assessment makes clear that restoring Golden State's former standards will require more than relying on its championship pedigree.
