The new British obsession: We spend MORE time talking about money than the weather, survey reveals

For generations, Britons have relied on a tried-and-tested conversation starter: complaining about the weather.

But there’s a new national obsession dominating our discussions – money.

New data reveals we're now spending far more time talking about our bank balances, bills and budgets than about whether we need an umbrella.

Research from Utility Warehouse reveals Britons now spend a staggering 20 hours a month talking about their personal bills, spending and savings, plus another 15 hours discussing the wider economy.

By comparison, we spend just 12 hours a month chatting about whether it’s raining, sunny, freezing or about to chuck it down.

David Walter, Chief Commercial Officer at Utility Warehouse, said: 'Our research shows just how much time and headspace Brits use keeping their finances on track.'

The poll of 2,000 people revealed that the majority of people blame the rising cost of living for usurping the weather as the nation’s favourite topic.

A quarter said they worry about their household finances every day, while two-thirds said money concerns keep them up at night.

Britons now spend an average of one and a half hours a week sorting out their finances, the data showed, from checking bank balances and paying household bills to moving money between accounts and keeping an eye on monthly energy bills.

Yet despite all that effort, half said they start running low on cash by the third week of the month.

The study showed that nearly half of Gen Z say they are focused on living life to the fullest, rather than paying off debts and securing a mortgage.

There are also clear generational differences in how people manage their money.

While younger adults are more likely to rely on banking apps and even AI tools, older Britons tend to keep a closer eye on their bank accounts or use a notebook to track spending.

The findings come as households prepare for the Budget, with millions waiting to discover what the Chancellor’s announcements could mean for their wages, savings and monthly outgoings.
