The Columbus Blue Jackets entered the 2026-27 season hoping to turn the page on years of dysfunction and disappointment. Five games in, things look exactly the same, and head coach Rick Bowness is already at his boiling point.
After Florida dismantled Columbus 7-3 on Thursday night, Bowness unloaded on his roster in a way that left little to the imagination.
"You gotta believe that performance will embarrass them enough to stop this, right?" Bowness said. "Because if they're not embarrassed by that, we don't want them on the team. Simple as that."
He went further, adding that if the Panthers game doesn't get his players' attention, "then they're on the wrong team."
The Jackets sit at 2-3-0, seventh in the Metropolitan Division and 14th in the Eastern Conference. Only the Philadelphia Flyers have been worse.
But the real question hovering over all of this isn't whether Bowness is right. It's what this kind of environment means for the franchise's most important player.
Zach Werenski, Columbus' superstar defenseman, was nearly traded this past summer. General manager Don Waddell reportedly explored deals after internal exit meetings, and the team reached an agreement in principle to send Werenski to the Dallas Stars. Werenski blocked the move by exercising his full no-movement clause.
The two sides released a joint statement affirming that Werenski wants to stay and help the team win. But the signals since then have been mixed at best.
When Columbus announced its leadership group for the new season, Werenski kept his alternate captain designation, a role he has held since 2021. The team, however, declined to name him captain, opting instead for a rotating system for the other two alternate spots.
Now layer Bowness' public tirades on top of that uncertainty. This is a franchise that lost captain Boone Jenner to free agency in Washington, saw Kirill Marchenko force his way to Toronto via trade, and watched Adam Fantilli's contract talks drag into training camp. The organizational turbulence has been relentless.
Bowness acknowledged that he believes in his group and that the problems are fixable. But going to this level of public criticism just five games into the season leaves him very little room to escalate if things continue to slide.
For a player like Werenski, who already had one foot out the door this summer, watching his coach torch the team on camera while the franchise refuses to give him the captaincy could be a potent combination. He has stated clearly that he never requested a trade. But wanting to stay and wanting to stay forever are two very different things.
The Blue Jackets need results in a hurry. If the losses keep piling up and Bowness keeps lighting fires in the press room, the biggest casualty might not be the season. It might be Werenski's willingness to stick around.
