PKR has denied allegations that the party is exploiting the arrest of political leaders for khalwat (close proximity) as a tactic to weaken its opponents.
Its Vice-President, Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, asserted that PKR does not use personal matters as a basis for political rivalry or confrontation.
"We have plenty of other work to do, rather than orchestrating khalwat incidents.
"It has never happened; it has never been discussed or arranged, either secretly or openly, to entrap political opponents. That is simply not what we do," he said.
It was reported yesterday that a former minister, who is also a political leader, was arrested by the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) in the Petaling Jaya district for khalwat with a woman believed to be the founder of a non-governmental organisation (NGO).
Today, the former Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, confirmed that he was one of the two individuals detained by JAIS.
On preparations for the Melaka State Election (PRN), Amirudin, who also serves as the Election Director for Pakatan Harapan (PH), stated that the coalition is currently finalising several key decisions.
"I expect that within another week, we will have a clearer direction regarding the election.
"We will field strong candidates; the selection process is currently in its final screening stage," he said.
Regarding the candidates to be fielded, he noted that the party intends to put forward individuals who have served the community and possess relevant experience.
"In some constituencies, we want to provide an opportunity for candidates to gain experience, particularly in areas where our base support might be relatively lower.
"This will serve as a long-term strategy for both the party and the PH coalition," he said. – October 17, 2026
