Mohamed Salah scored a penalty and provided an assist as Trabzonspor secured a comfortable 2-0 victory over Hearts in the Conference League.
As reported by BBC Sport on Thursday, the Liverpool legend opened the scoring from the spot in the first half before setting up Franculino Dju for a superb second goal after the break to seal the win for the Turkish side.
Hearts, who were already struggling with injuries to several key first-team players, suffered another setback when full-back Harry Milne was ruled out after picking up an injury in training on the eve of the match. Attacker Rogers Mato was consequently deployed at left-back.
Defender Christian Borchgrevink was also forced off through injury just before half-time, further reducing head coach Wouter Vrancken’s options.
Coming into the game following a heavy 7-1 defeat to Celtic in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday, Hearts were under pressure to respond positively.
The hosts had an early opportunity to take the lead when Malachi Fagan-Walcott headed against the post from a promising position.
However, Trabzonspor gradually gained control of the contest. After having two penalty appeals turned down, including one for a close offside in the build-up, the visitors were eventually awarded a spot-kick.
Salah stepped up and calmly sent his penalty down the middle of the goal past goalkeeper Beau Reus to give Trabzonspor the lead.
Franculino, who had won the penalty after being brought down by Tomas Magnusson, doubled the advantage shortly before the hour mark. The forward exchanged a well-timed one-two with Salah before curling a superb finish into the far corner.
The second goal effectively ended Hearts’ hopes of mounting a comeback and left them still searching for their first win in the competition.
Josh McPake later fired narrowly wide as the game gradually lost intensity, while Trabzonspor’s Sidny Lopes Cabral was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for a late challenge on Sabah Kerjota.
Despite the defeat, Hearts continued to press diligently and showed greater resilience and determination as they sought to recover from their damaging loss to Celtic.
Trabzonspor, meanwhile, will take confidence from an efficient performance inspired by Salah, whose goal and assist proved decisive in securing all three points.
