Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has signed into law a bill establishing the Kaduna State College of Post-Basic Nursing Sciences in Rigasa, Igabi Local Government Area.
The Commissioner for Information and Culture, Ahmed Maiyaki, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday describing the legislation as a strategic investment in specialist nursing education.
He said the college would address shortages of specialist nurses and improve healthcare delivery, particularly in maternal and child health, emergency response and intensive care services.
According to him, the institution will operate as a specialised tertiary training college, with its main campus in Rigasa and provisions for additional campuses and training centres, subject to regulatory approval.
Maiyaki said the college would offer programmes in midwifery, psychiatric and mental health nursing, perioperative nursing, paediatric nursing, accident and emergency nursing, intensive care and public health nursing.
Other programmes would cover nursing education and administration, equipping healthcare professionals with specialised skills to address critical manpower gaps and improve patient outcomes.
He added that the institution would promote research, continuous professional development and partnerships with teaching hospitals, universities, specialist facilities and other accredited institutions.
The law provides for a Governing Council to oversee the college’s strategic direction and an Academic Board responsible for academic standards, research and professional training.
Maiyaki said all programmes would comply with accreditation and regulatory requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria and other relevant authorities.
He said the initiative complemented the state government’s broader health sector reforms, including the upgrading of 255 primary healthcare centres and rehabilitation of 16 general hospitals.
The commissioner stressed that investments in medical infrastructure must be matched with qualified personnel capable of delivering specialised services, particularly in underserved communities.
He said the college would establish a sustainable pipeline of specialist nurses, strengthen institutional capacity and contribute to improved healthcare outcomes across the state.
Maiyaki reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to developing the institution into a centre of excellence in specialist nursing education, research and clinical training.
He said the initiative aligned with the governor’s vision of providing accessible, quality and people-centred healthcare services to residents.
