Universal's fourth "Mummy" film, bringing back Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, will be called "The Mummy: The Book of the Dead", Variety reported on Thursday (15 October).
Fraser and Weisz return as Rick and Evie O'Connell. The cast also features John Hannah, Michael Johnston, Numan Acar, Kevin J O'Connor and Oded Fehr.
The studio has not disclosed the story. The film is set to open in cinemas on 15 October next year.
Fraser and Weisz first appeared together in the 1999 hit "The Mummy", about a treasure hunter who unwittingly revives a cursed Egyptian priest with supernatural abilities.
The film modernised one of Universal's classic monster properties and led to two sequels: "The Mummy Returns" (2001) and "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" (2008). Fraser appeared in both sequels, while Weisz did not return for the third.
It also inspired the 2002 spinoff "The Scorpion King", starring Dwayne Johnson.
Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who work together as Radio Silence, will direct the new film from a script by David Coggeshall.
The directing duo are best known for "Ready or Not" (2019) and for relaunching the "Scream" series for Paramount in 2022. Coggeshall has written "The Family Plan" and "Orphan: First Kill".
Sean Daniel is producing. He has worked on the franchise's last five films, including the 2017 Tom Cruise reboot, which flopped with critics and at the box office and ended Universal's plans for a connected Dark Universe.
Further producers are William Sherak, James Vanderbilt and Paul Neinstein of Project X Entertainment, along with Clayton Townsend. Fraser and Jason F Brown of Hivemind are executive producers.
