Opinion: I’m intrigued by the ingenuity and creativity of those politicians opposing wealth tax proposals. I sometimes feel that way about the tax accountants who devote their intelligence and energy to finding ways to avoid taxes of all kinds rather than to more socially and economically productive pursuits. At least their self-interest in having the wealthy pay their fees rather than public tax is clear.
There is something to be said (not all of it polite) for those who simply regard all tax as theft. At least they are clearly marking themselves out. I remind them that there is an equally valid argument that all property is theft.
