Matt Campbell's Penn State Recruiting Pitch Went Viral for the Wrong Reason

A few hours before Penn State's two-game losing streak reached three, Penn State coach Matt Campbell told a roomful of recruits why they should consider his program. It was a fairly standard recruiting pitch, built around Campbell's core values, that broke contain on social media. For the wrong reason.

Which was a shame, because embedded in the video's comment-section nonsense was Campbell's central recruiting thesis that few chose or cared to notice. It's the foundation of Campbell's coaching framework that will carry him to success at Penn State or get him fired. Either way, he won't stray from it.

Here's the video, shot by a parent of a high-profile recruit, from the Beaver Stadium recruiting lounge just hours before the Nittany Lions fell to USC in the White Out. Campbell bullet-pointed the values he recruits (character and community, passion for football, pursuit of education) into a tight five minutes.

But that's not what the mentions heard. Thanks in part to a viral graphic from On3, Campbell's recruiting pitch somehow became a debate about whose college town is more college.

Yes, Campbell called Penn State "College Football Town, USA" and made pretty benign comparisons to Austin, Texas, and Columbus, Ohio, two state capitols with populations 20 times larger than State College.

Campbell doesn't care a bit about fishing for wide engagement. He hasn't posted to his X account in more than two years and won't assign a staffer to help him brand. "I'm not into branding," Campbell said earlier this year, waving away any personal need for social media.

So while college football fans teethed in On3's mentions, they missed the really important thing Campbell told those recruits.

'It's a mirage'

Penn State gave a record White Out crowd of 114,419 quite a show last Saturday night. The crowd was organically loud and engaged, and the pre-game video and light show both captured and magnified the moment. Afterward, Campbell said he regretted that his team could not deliver a win.

But it was fascinating how Campbell previewed the atmosphere for recruits and their parents just hours earlier. He told them basically not to get lost in the lights and noise and "Mo Bamba" loop.

"Yes, it's really cool to come on a night like this and see 110,000 people at a game, but it's a mirage a little bit," Campbell told the visitors. "There's only 12 guaranteed games every year, and you'd better find out what's going on the other 350 days out of the year [in the program]."

Campbell sold nothing. Not financial contracts (which will come later) or playing time or NFL scouting opportunities. Instead, he asked this crowd ask of themselves, "Who are you when the lights aren't on?"

Campbell is far from the only coach who still delivers this speech in a contract college football world. Some coaches still believe it. Campbell's is among them.

"From my end of things, the reality of my message has never wavered [about] what we're looking for in the right student-athletes to to come play for Penn State," Campbell told reporters Wednesday after practice. "Character, passion and understanding the value of an education. If that resonates with the right people, then we'll be just fine as we continue to move ourselves forward."

'We are not wavering'

Campbell made that recruiting pitch hours before his losing streak at Penn State reached three games. So far, this iteration of the Nittany Lions has proven shallow of the roster talent needed to compete in the Big Ten. Campbell and his staff will evaluate their budget, acquisition and evaluation process deeply after the season.

But he'll also remain committed to the message. Campbell is a student of hard times. He thrives on learning how to emerge from them better equipped for the next round. That was the central thesis of his recruiting speech.

Why tell recruits that the program and town's biggest night of football of the year is "a mirage"? Because he wants them to become players who won't check out or buckle when the team loses 31-23 in the White Out.

After that game, Penn State tight end Andrew Rappleyea called Campbell the right coach to lead the Nittany Lions out of their funk.

"I mean, we've been in this situation. I was here last year," Rappleyea said. "The guys pointed fingers, the guys turned on each other. It's all about how you're going to respond. ... And I promise you, that will not happen, because we have a great coach leading us in that locker room."

Maybe Penn State doesn't emerge from it. The Nittany Lions can't run the ball, can't stop the run and don't have enough healthy game-changers. Campbell's responsible for that.

But he shouldn't be attached to a sideshow debate because some can't hear what he's really saying.

"We are not wavering," Campbell said. "We are going to build the right foundation, standards and expectations on how we do things. ... The opportunity to go and prove to ourselves again we can grow and do hard things well, I think that's the narrative. That's where we're not going to flinch. We're going to continue to hold standards, we are going to continue to hold accountability, and we're going to continue to demand a pathway forward."
