Honourable Almameh Gibba, the National Assembly member for Foni Kansala, has been selected by former Gambian president Yahya A.J.J. Jammeh, as the presidential candidate for his faction of the Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction (APRC) in the December 2026 elections.
The faction, widely known as “No to Alliance”, broke away from the APRC faction led by Fabakary Tombong Jatta after the latter agreed to join President Adama Barrow’s National People’s Party-led alliance.
Gibba’s selection signals the faction’s intention to contest the election independently, as political parties and alliances prepare for the presidential poll.
In the 2021 presidential election, the “No to Alliance” faction endorsed and campaigned for Mamma Kandeh, leader of the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC).
However, Kandeh has recently joined the NPP-led alliance, creating a different political landscape for the faction ahead of the next election.
Gibba, who represents Foni Kansala in the National Assembly, will now be expected to lead the faction’s campaign as it seeks to mobilise supporters and present an alternative to the governing alliance.
The December election is expected to draw competing parties and political groupings seeking to win support across The Gambia.
Jammeh ruled the country from 1994 until 2017, when he left office after losing the presidential election to Adama Barrow.
