Police have deployed 50 additional officers in Mubende after deadly attacks in Kitenga Sub-county, while a suspect was arrested in Ibanda as investigations continue.
Police have deployed 50 additional officers in Mubende District following a series of killings, attempted murder and aggravated robberies in Kitenga Sub-county, as investigations into the October 9 attacks have led to the arrest of a suspect in Ibanda District.
The attacks occurred in the early hours of Independence Day, when unidentified assailants reportedly raided three villages in Kitenga, prompting security agencies to reinforce their presence in the affected communities.
Wamala Region Police spokesperson SSP Lameck Kigozi said the additional personnel were drawn from the Field Force Unit (FFU) headquarters in Naguru, Kampala, to support officers already deployed in the district.
Kigozi said the deployment was intended to strengthen security operations, protect residents and their property, and prevent further attacks.
"The additional personnel have been deployed to reinforce the existing security teams on the ground and strengthen efforts to protect lives and property," Kigozi said.
He added that officers had been deployed in areas including Kitenga Sub-county to support joint operations involving police and the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF).
The reinforcement is part of ongoing efforts to restore residents' confidence and prevent further criminal activity as investigations continue.
In a related development, police arrested Nelson Nuwataho in Ibanda District on October 12 in connection with the incidents in Kitenga.
According to Kigozi, the arrest was made by the Rwizi Region Crime Intelligence team following the analysis of investigative leads and intelligence gathered from the affected villages in Mubende.
"The arrest followed the pursuit of investigative leads and intelligence information obtained from the affected communities," Kigozi said.
Nuwataho was subsequently handed over to a team of Wamala Region officers led by the Regional Police Commander before being transferred to Mubende Police for interrogation.
Police have not provided further details about the evidence linking the suspect to the attacks.
Investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the reported killings, attempted murder and aggravated robberies, as well as identify any other suspects who may have been involved.
The additional deployment is expected to support investigations and strengthen security in Kitenga and neighbouring areas. Police said further information would be communicated as inquiries progress.
