Choosing the right entrance gate can make a big difference to a Kruger National Park trip.
Kruger is huge, and entering through the wrong gate can add hours of driving inside the park before you reach your accommodation.
SANParks has nine entrance gates, with different gates providing easier access to different parts of the park. The best one to use generally depends on which camp you’re staying at.
Which Kruger gate should you use?
Here are some of the most popular camps and the gates that give you the most direct access:
| Popular camp | Recommended gate | Approx. travel time |
|---|---|---|
| Skukuza | Paul Kruger Gate | 20 min |
| Pretoriuskop | Numbi Gate | 20 min |
| Berg-en-Dal | Malelane Gate | 20 min |
| Crocodile Bridge | Crocodile Bridge Gate | At the gate |
| Lower Sabie | Crocodile Bridge Gate | 1 hour |
| Satara | Orpen Gate | 1 hr 15 min |
| Talamati | Orpen Gate | 1 hr 15 min |
| Letaba | Phalaborwa Gate | 1 hr 30 min |
| Olifants | Phalaborwa Gate | 2 hours |
| Punda Maria | Punda Maria Gate | 20 min |
| Shingwedzi | Punda Maria Gate | 1 hr 15 min |
These are SANParks’ approximate minimum travel times via the shortest route at legal speed limits. They don’t include stops for wildlife, traffic or other delays, so visitors should allow additional time.
It’s also very easy to underestimate the distances inside Kruger.
For example, Satara is only about 48km from Orpen Gate, but SANParks estimates the journey at around 1 hour 15 minutes. From Phalaborwa Gate, however, Satara is approximately 120km away and takes around five hours.
Similarly, Skukuza is about 12km from Paul Kruger Gate, making it a much more convenient choice than entering through Phabeni, from where the journey is about 39km and roughly 1¾ hours.
This can make a big difference on your arrival day, particularly if you’re travelling with children, have a late start or want to maximise your time on safari.
The southern, central and northern gates
The easiest way to think about Kruger’s gates is by region.
Southern Kruger is served by gates including Malelane, Crocodile Bridge, Numbi, Paul Kruger and Phabeni. These are particularly useful for camps such as Berg-en-Dal, Lower Sabie, Skukuza and Pretoriuskop.
Central Kruger is easiest to access through Orpen Gate, particularly if you’re staying at Satara or Talamati.
For the northern section, Phalaborwa and Punda Maria are important access points. Phalaborwa provides relatively direct access to Letaba, Mopani and Olifants, while Punda Maria is particularly convenient for Punda Maria and Shingwedzi.
Don’t just choose the closest gate to your starting point
The closest gate geographically isn’t necessarily the best gate for your trip.
If you’re driving from Johannesburg, for example, SANParks lists distances ranging from around 411km to Numbi Gate to about 600km to Pafuri Gate. The route you choose should therefore take into account both the journey from home and where your accommodation is inside the park.
If you’re flying in, the same principle applies. Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA) is relatively convenient for the southern gates, while Hoedspruit’s Eastgate Airport provides access towards the central and northern areas. Phalaborwa also has the Kruger Park Gateway Airport, just 3km from Phalaborwa Gate.
