Ghana have reportedly appointed Swedish coach Kim Lars Björkegren to take charge of both the men’s and women’s national football teams following the departure of former men’s team coach Carlos Queiroz.
The reported decision will see Björkegren combine responsibilities for the two national teams, having been appointed head coach of Ghana’s women’s team in January 2025.
According to reports from local media outlets, the 44-year-old has emerged as the preferred choice of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to provide an interim solution for the men’s team following Queiroz’s exit.
The development would place Björkegren in charge of both teams as Ghana continue preparations for their respective international assignments.
Björkegren will reportedly work alongside Medeama head coach Ibrahim Tanko and Godwin Attram, the current assistant coach of the men’s national team, as part of the technical arrangement.
The reported appointment comes as the Ghanaian football authorities seek to maintain stability in the men’s team following the departure of Queiroz, who recently left the position.
Björkegren’s immediate responsibility with the men’s side is expected to include preparations for their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Somalia.
Björkegren brings international coaching experience
The Swedish tactician has built coaching experience across different leagues and football environments, having previously managed Linköpings FC and Malmö FF in Sweden.
He has also worked in China, Cyprus and the United States, gaining experience outside Swedish football before taking charge of Ghana’s women’s national team.
His appointment to the women’s team in January 2025 marked the beginning of his work with Ghanaian international football, and the reported move to oversee the men’s side would significantly expand his responsibilities.
Combining both roles is expected to present a demanding challenge, particularly with the need to coordinate preparations, technical decisions and player assessments across the men’s and women’s teams.
Somalia fixture awaits Ghana
The men’s team’s upcoming 2027 AFCON qualifying fixture against Somalia is expected to be among Björkegren’s immediate priorities if the reported arrangement is confirmed.
Ghana will be looking to organise their preparations and maintain competitiveness as they pursue qualification for the continental tournament.
The involvement of Tanko and Attram is expected to provide additional technical support as the team prepares for the assignment.
Score Nigeria reported the development on Friday, October 16, citing local media outlets. However, the report did not include an official statement from the Ghana Football Association confirming the appointment.
