A fire that broke out at a shop on the sixth floor of Manzur Khan Plaza in the capital's Chawkbazar area, took 37 hours to fully extinguish.
The fire, which broke out on Monday afternoon (12 October), was completely extinguished at 6:30am today (14 October), according to a statement from Shahjahan Shikder, media officer at the Fire Service and Civil Defence.
According to the statement, the blaze started at 5:02pm at the market beside Chhota Katra AC Mosque in Chawkbazar. Three fire service units initially responded, with more units deployed as the operation progressed.
A total of 10 units were eventually involved in tackling the blaze, it added.
The fire was brought under control at 5:20am yesterday (13 October). However, firefighters could not declare it fully extinguished at that stage because smoke and residual heat remained beneath goods stored in warehouses inside the building.
According to fire service, the sixth floor of the market suffered the most extensive damage, while the damage to the seventh floor was comparatively limited.
The number of warehouses or shops whose goods were damaged, along with the total financial losses, could not immediately be determined.
The fire service said an investigation would be conducted to establish the cause of the blaze and assess the extent of the damage.
