Humla, October 23
Around 200 livestock, including yaks, have been rescued from high-altitude pastures in Limi, a remote settlement in Namkha Rural Municipality-6 of Humla district, nearly a month after heavy snowfall left their whereabouts unknown.
The animals had been taken to graze in the high pastures of Limi, located in the trans-Himalayan region of northwestern Nepal. Heavy snowfall from September 25 to 27 left the area covered in thick snow, making it difficult to determine the animals’ condition and carry out search and rescue operations.
According to Paljor Tamang, ward chair of Namkha Rural Municipality-6, the rescued livestock include 100 yaks, 50 horses and 50 female yaks and yak-cattle hybrids.
Tamang said the animals were rescued after considerable effort from high pastures in the Ning Khola, Sakya Khola, Geu Khola and Lapcha areas, where they had remained out of contact for an extended period.
The thick snow cover and adverse weather conditions had made it difficult for rescue teams to reach the grazing areas and search for the animals.
Residents of Limi face recurring difficulties during the winter snowfall season. Heavy snow at the Nara and Nyalu passes often blocks roads, making travel between Limi and the district headquarters, Simkot, difficult.
Locals say road closures leave the remote settlement cut off from the district headquarters, disrupting daily travel and access to essential services.
