Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has provided an update on goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez after the Argentine international was stretchered off following a serious head collision during the Blues’ 2-0 Premier League victory over Everton on Saturday.
Alonso confirmed that Martinez was conscious when he left the stadium and had been taken to hospital for precautionary medical examinations, offering some reassurance after a worrying incident that overshadowed Chelsea’s impressive away victory.
The 34-year-old goalkeeper sustained the injury midway through the second half while attempting to clear a free-kick. He collided with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite and another Everton player, Thierno Barry, as the players challenged for the ball. Blueprint reports
Martinez required lengthy treatment on the pitch before being carried off on a stretcher, with his neck supported, and replaced by Mike Penders, who made his Premier League debut.
Speaking after the match, Alonso said the club was waiting for the outcome of the medical examinations before making any definitive statement about the goalkeeper’s condition.
“As far as I know, he left the stadium conscious and right now he is in the hospital doing precautionary tests,” the Chelsea manager said.
“So let’s see, but that’s what I know so far. We need to wait. Hopefully it won’t be too bad, but we need to wait at the moment.”
The incident prompted concern among Chelsea supporters, particularly after Martinez appeared to be in considerable discomfort and the match was interrupted for several minutes.
Although Alonso’s update confirmed that the goalkeeper was conscious when he left the stadium, the manager did not disclose a diagnosis or indicate how long Martinez might be unavailable.
Collision overshadows Chelsea’s victory
Chelsea’s victory at Everton was an important result for Alonso’s side, but the concern surrounding Martinez became the major talking point after the final whistle.
The goalkeeper was injured while coming out to deal with an inswinging free-kick, making contact with Branthwaite and Barry during the challenge.
Medical personnel from both teams attended to the players, with Branthwaite also receiving treatment before continuing the match. Martinez, however, required more extensive attention and was eventually stretchered off.
The lengthy interruption reflected the seriousness with which the incident was treated, particularly given the possibility of a head or neck injury.
Martinez’s departure left Chelsea facing a difficult situation with much of the second half still to play. The goalkeeper had been involved in the team’s efforts to keep Everton at bay, making important interventions before the collision.
The incident also meant that Penders had to enter the match under unexpected circumstances, with the young Belgian immediately assuming responsibility for protecting Chelsea’s lead.
Chelsea ultimately saw out the contest without conceding, ensuring that the injury did not derail their pursuit of three valuable points.
The club will now await further medical information before determining Martinez’s availability for its upcoming fixtures. Until the results of the examinations are known, any assessment of the likely recovery period would be premature.
Penders rises to the occasion
While Martinez’s injury was a major concern, Penders offered Chelsea a measure of reassurance by stepping into the game and helping the visitors preserve their advantage.
The young goalkeeper was handed his Premier League debut at a particularly demanding moment, replacing an experienced international during an away match in which Everton were still searching for a way back into the contest.
Penders had previously featured in cup matches, but his introduction against Everton represented a significant step in his development and an opportunity to demonstrate his readiness for first-team responsibility.
Alonso praised the goalkeeper’s character, confidence and performance, stressing that Chelsea needed players throughout the squad to be prepared to contribute when called upon.
“Mike has personality, he’s brave, and we have full trust with him. He did well,” Alonso said.
“He played in the cup games and whenever he’s needed, like the other players whenever they are needed they can perform.”
The manager added that the team’s strength depended on every player feeling valued and understanding that opportunities could arise at any time.
“It’s all about the squad, that all the players feel important and can have their moment whenever they are needed, and that’s very positive,” he said.
Penders’ performance was particularly significant because Chelsea were seeking to protect a clean sheet after a difficult run in the Premier League.
The Blues had not recorded a league clean sheet since January, making their defensive performance at Everton an important achievement as they look to establish greater consistency.
Although Martinez’s injury created an unwanted disruption, Penders helped the team negotiate the closing stages and maintain its defensive organisation.
His display could become even more important if Martinez requires time away from action, although Chelsea are unlikely to make decisions about their goalkeeping arrangements until the senior goalkeeper’s condition is clearer.
Neto’s double secures crucial three points
Chelsea’s victory was built around two goals from Pedro Neto, who scored shortly after half-time and struck again in the closing stages to settle the contest.
After a competitive first half that ended goalless, the visitors broke the deadlock just 43 seconds into the second period.
Jorrel Hato advanced down the left and delivered a low ball into the penalty area, where Neto found space to finish past Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
The goal gave Chelsea the breakthrough they had been seeking after a first half in which both teams had opportunities but struggled to convert them.
Everton had threatened through Jack Grealish and Thierno Barry, while Chelsea came close to scoring when Moises Caicedo met a corner with a powerful volley that struck the crossbar.
Neto also tested Pickford before the interval, but the decisive moment arrived almost immediately after the restart, allowing Chelsea to approach the remainder of the match with greater control.
The game became more complicated for the visitors when Martinez was injured, but Chelsea maintained their discipline and limited Everton’s ability to mount a sustained comeback.
Neto then sealed the victory in the 90th minute. Jordan Henderson’s free-kick was blocked, and the loose ball fell to the Portuguese winger, who calmly found the bottom corner.
The brace gave Chelsea a deserved 2-0 win and condemned Everton to their first league defeat of the season.
The result also moved Chelsea provisionally into fourth place in the Premier League table, strengthening their position as the campaign progressed.
Neto’s contribution was particularly valuable because his goals ensured the team could secure the result despite the disruption caused by Martinez’s injury.
Alonso addresses other injury concerns
Martinez was not the only player whose fitness featured in Alonso’s post-match assessment.
The Chelsea manager confirmed that Malo Gusto missed the Everton fixture because of illness, while Pep Chavarria was scheduled to undergo further tests on Sunday after experiencing a problem during training on Friday.
Chavarria’s condition will need to be assessed before Chelsea determine whether he will be available for the team’s next match.
The absences highlight the importance of squad depth as Chelsea navigate the Premier League campaign, particularly with fixtures continuing to arrive after the international break.
Alonso’s comments about Penders also underlined his expectation that players must be ready to take their opportunities when injuries or illness affect the available squad.
Chelsea will need that depth if Martinez is ruled out for any period, although the immediate priority remains obtaining a clearer picture of the goalkeeper’s health.
Tottenham clash next for Chelsea
Chelsea are scheduled to host Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, October 24, in their next Premier League fixture, followed by a League Cup meeting with Liverpool on October 28.
Martinez’s availability for those matches will depend on the outcome of his medical assessments and any subsequent recovery requirements.
Given the nature of the collision, Chelsea will be expected to prioritise the goalkeeper’s health rather than rush him back before he is ready.
Penders’ encouraging debut provides the club with an alternative option in the meantime, while Alonso will also assess the fitness of Gusto and Chavarria ahead of the forthcoming fixtures.
For now, the Chelsea manager’s update offers cautious reassurance that Martinez was conscious when he left the stadium, but it does not establish the full extent of his injury.
The club and its supporters will be hoping that the medical examinations bring positive news following an incident that briefly turned a successful afternoon into a worrying one.
Chelsea left Everton with three points, two goals from Neto and a long-awaited league clean sheet. However, the condition of Martinez remains the central concern as the Blues prepare for a demanding run of matches.
