ONGWEDIVA – Eight schools with community hostels in the Oshikoto region have received water tanks as donation from the office of the governor, to improve water storage, hygiene and living conditions for learner.
Oshikoto Governor Sacky Kathindi officially handed over the water tanks to Omukwiyugwemanya Senior Secondary School, King Kauluma Combined School, Amen Combined School, Evale Combined School, Onyuulaye Combined School, Elombe Combined School, Iipopo Combined School and Ekulo Senior Secondary School.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Kathindi said that access to water was essential for quality education and the well-being of learners, particularly those residing in community hostels far from their homes.
“Water is life. Water is health. Water is dignity. Most importantly, water is a fundamental requirement for quality education and the well-being of our learners,” he said.
He explained that the tanks would help address water availability and storage challenges at the beneficiary institutions, supporting food preparation, sanitation and hygiene while creating a healthier environment for learning.
Kathindi added that community hostels served as second homes for learners and that providing essential services was necessary to ensure they lived and studied in safe and healthy conditions.
He urged school management teams, hostel supervisors, staff members and learners to take responsibility for maintaining the tanks and ensuring they benefited both current and future learners.
Oshikoto Education Director Hilma Nuunyango-George welcomed the donation, describing it as a meaningful contribution towards addressing water challenges affecting schools and the communities they serve.
She said that water was needed daily for drinking, cooking, cleaning, personal hygiene and sanitation, adding that shortages affected learners’ health, comfort and learning experiences.
“When water is unavailable, the health, comfort and learning experiences of our learners are affected,” she said.
Nuunyango-George said that the tanks would enable schools to store water and manage periods of shortage more effectively, contributing to improved hygiene and better living conditions in hostels.
She commended the governor’s office for recognising the challenges faced by schools and responding with practical support.
The education directorate also called on beneficiary schools and hostel committees to ensure proper maintenance of the facilities and promote responsible water use among learners and staff.
Kathindi reaffirmed his commitment to working with stakeholders to address challenges affecting communities, emphasising that education development must include essential services that allow learners to reach their full potential.
He said improving learning environments remained important in ensuring that every learner had the resources and support needed to succeed.
