Dozens of people watched as a nearly 70-metre-high mining tower was demolished at the former ČSA coal mine in Karviná on Wednesday morning. The demolition required 948 drilled holes and nearly 147 kilograms of explosives.
The tower stood above a shaft more than one kilometre deep, used to bring coal to the surface and ventilate the mine. More than 144 million tonnes of hard coal were extracted from the mine before it closed in 2021.
State-owned company Diamo is now responsible for dealing with the aftermath of mining at the site. Work to seal the shaft began in November 2025.
