Shillong, Oct 23: A man who slashed the neck of a minor boy with a sharp knife in 2022 has been convicted and sentenced to six years of simple imprisonment by the District and Sessions Court in Shillong.
The convict has been identified as Deepak Debnath.
As per the press release from East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem, IPS, the case was registered on August 22, 2022, after an FIR was received at Bholaganj P.O.P alleging that Debnath attempted to murder the complainant’s minor son.
A case — Shella P.S Case No. 24(08)2022 under Sections 307/326 IPC — was registered and Debnath was arrested. After investigation, chargesheet was filed on February 10, 2023.
On October 7, 2026, the Court of DR Kharbteng, District and Sessions Judge, East Khasi Hills, convicted Debnath in Sessions Case No. 04(T)2023.
He has been sentenced to 6 years simple imprisonment with a fine of Rs 10,000 under Section 304 Part II IPC, and an additional one month simple imprisonment in default of payment of fine.
The case was investigated by UBSI R. Ranee, now posted at Mawdiangdiang OP, Shillong.
