Consumer discretionary spending has been decreasing over the last few years, and only recently has shown early signs of recovery, according to Deloitte. Yet DoorDash revenue has grown fairly steadily since 2021, along with other convenience delivery brands like Uber.
Brands that consistently deliver convenience and are reliable are winning even during downturns because consumers want assurance. According to BCG consumers are moving toward value- and utility-driven spending. In their research, 67 percent of consumers said they wouldn’t buy a product, even if they could afford it, if they didn’t perceive strong value.
Consumers who use convenience delivery apps know what they want and are confident they’ll get what they are paying for. Instead of promising future benefits or painting a vision of what a product could do for you, these brands don’t overpromise or sell the dream. They sell reliability and value.
That is the moat. It is what makes some businesses become a default even in weak markets.

Make predictability and dependability your product features
Convenience comes at a premium today. Platform fees and delivery charges make apps like Uber and DoorDash more expensive than alternatives like public transport or cooking at home.
Yet, they have become a default part of our lives because they win on reliability. Ordering a ride-sharing or food-delivery service feels known and familiar. That’s why they’re less affected by cost-cuts, while other aspiration-selling brands suffer lower retention rates.
The most successful startups today aren’t focusing only on innovation. While innovation is important, predictability and dependability signal value, trust, and consistency. When every customer who interacts with your brand experiences the same user journey, smooth onboarding or checkouts, and seamless communication, you have made yourself reliable. Users know exactly what to expect when they come to you.
