October 12, Colombo (LNW): Sri Lankan authorities are closely monitoring the situation in Nepal’s flood-hit Gorkha District, with no Sri Lankan nationals reported to have been affected so far, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Employment.
The ministry said the Sri Lankan Embassy in Kathmandu was maintaining contact with members of the Sri Lankan community living in the affected district to assess their safety and keep track of developments.
The embassy is also providing updates on conditions in the affected areas and has issued travel advisories urging Sri Lankan nationals to exercise caution when considering journeys to locations impacted by the flooding.
Fresh flooding reportedly struck parts of Gorkha, in central Nepal, during the early hours of October 11, raising concerns over the safety of residents and the condition of essential infrastructure. Several people have reportedly gone missing as a result of the latest incident.
Reports in Nepalese media indicate that the floodwaters have caused extensive damage, destroying or damaging homes, roads and bridges. The destruction is also likely to complicate access to affected communities and create difficulties for emergency response teams.
Sri Lankan officials have not reported any casualties involving their nationals, but the embassy continues to monitor the situation and maintain communication with the local community as further information emerges.
Authorities have advised Sri Lankans in Nepal, particularly those in or travelling towards affected areas, to follow official guidance and remain alert to changing conditions.
