Leader of the Official Opposition Hon Manasseh Damukana Sogavare has extended condolences on behalf of the Official Opposition Group in Parliament on the passing of Hon David Gina, Member of Parliament for South New Georgia, Rendova and Tetepari Constituency.
Sogavare said the passing of Gina is a great loss to his family, his constituents, the people of Western Province, the National Parliament and Solomon Islands as a whole. He said Gina's years of public service and his contribution to provincial leadership, parliamentary democracy and national development will be remembered with respect.
Gina served the country in several public capacities. As the elected member for South New Georgia, Rendova and Tetepari, he carried the responsibility of representing the interests of his constituents in the National Parliament, and he also served as Minister for Rural Development.
In August 2026 Gina took on the additional responsibility of Deputy Speaker of the National Parliament, an office that supports the Speaker and helps ensure the orderly conduct of parliamentary proceedings.
Sogavare said Gina's commitment to upholding the dignity and integrity of that office reflected the significance of the responsibility within the country's parliamentary democracy.
Before his service at the national level, Gina was Premier of Western Province from 2018 to 2021. Sogavare said that period of provincial leadership formed an important chapter in Gina's public life and remains part of his legacy in the governance and development of Western Province and Solomon Islands.
His passing is deeply felt not only by his immediate family and constituents but also by his parliamentary colleagues and the wider national community, Sogavare said.
"Despite our differences in political views and responsibilities, the passing of a fellow Member of Parliament reminds us of our shared humanity and our common commitment to serving the people of Solomon Islands," Sogavare said.
On behalf of the Opposition Group, its staff and his family, Sogavare extended sympathies to Gina's immediate family, relatives, friends, parliamentary colleagues and the people of South New Georgia, Rendova and Tetepari Constituency.
He said the Opposition stands in solidarity with all those mourning, and prayed that they find strength, comfort and peace at this time.
