In the mountains of Uttarakhand, a journey to a nearby town can become a long trip because of winding roads, steep slopes and difficult terrain. For Ravi Tamta, an innovator from Almora, this everyday challenge became the starting point for an unusual ambition: building a vehicle that could travel above the roads instead of following them.Tamta's efforts have now drawn attention after his electric flying vehicle prototype, HAPIDA SKYNeX, completed a test flight in August 2026. The single-seat craft lifted off from an Army helipad in Almora and remained airborne for nearly a minute under the supervision of district officials. The trial marked an important milestone in a project that Tamta says has taken 13 years of research and experimentation. What makes his story stand out is not just the machine but the journey behind it.
Without a formal engineering degree, Tamta relied on online learning, practical experimentation and persistence to work towards an idea that could eventually have applications in regions where road connectivity remains a challenge.
A problem in the mountains led to an idea in the sky
Tamta comes from Kaflikhan village near Jageshwar Dham in Almora district. In mountainous areas, the distance between two places does not always reflect how long it takes to travel between them.
A short journey on a map can involve winding roads, sharp turns and difficult terrain. This can become especially challenging during medical emergencies, when reaching a hospital quickly may be critical. Tamta began exploring whether a compact flying vehicle could help people bypass such obstacles.
Instead of depending on a conventional runway, he worked towards a design capable of vertical take-off and landing. His project took shape under Hapida Sky Private Limited, the venture he founded to develop personal air-mobility technology. The resulting prototype, HAPIDA SKYNeX, is designed as a single-seat, battery-powered electric flying vehicle. The broader ambition is to explore whether personal aerial transport could eventually make difficult journeys quicker, particularly in remote areas. However, using the vehicle for emergency medical travel remains a potential future application, not an established service.
How HAPIDA SKYNeX gets off the ground
The prototype draws on multirotor drone technology. In simple terms, multiple motors and propellers generate the upward thrust needed to lift the craft into the air. By controlling the rotors, such systems can also help manage balance and movement. The electric propulsion system means the vehicle is designed to fly without burning aviation fuel onboard. This eliminates direct exhaust emissions during flight, although its overall environmental impact would also depend on factors such as how its batteries are manufactured, charged and eventually disposed of.The concept is different from a conventional car, which travels on roads, and from an ordinary aeroplane, which generally requires a runway. A vertical take-off and landing vehicle could potentially operate from smaller, suitable spaces, making the idea relevant to locations where building runways is difficult. But building a prototype that can briefly lift off is only the first step. A practical passenger aircraft must also demonstrate stable and repeatable flight, reliable controls, adequate battery performance, structural strength and safe responses to technical failures.
Its performance in mountain conditions would require particular attention because wind, changing weather and limited landing options can make flying more challenging.
Thirteen years of experiments without a formal engineering degree
Tamta's development journey has involved years of learning and trial and error. Rather than relying on a conventional engineering education, he used the internet to explore technical concepts and gradually turn his idea into a working prototype.
The project was also developed despite financial and technical constraints. Its maiden flight in August 2026 represented a significant moment after more than a decade of work. The trial took place under the supervision of district officials, with local residents watching as the craft lifted off. District Magistrate Anshul Singh and Senior Superintendent of Police Chandrashekhar R. Ghodke were among those present, according to The New Indian Express.
Following the demonstration, Tamta said the prototype would undergo further trials in phases to improve its safety, capacity and performance.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami also congratulated the innovator, describing the achievement as an inspiration for young people.
From practical inventions to a bigger mobility challenge
HAPIDA SKYNeX is not the only invention associated with Tamta. His earlier work has included firefighting equipment and an assistive walking stick for people with disabilities.
These projects reflect an approach centred on developing devices to address practical needs. The flying vehicle takes that approach into a more technically demanding field. If the concept can eventually meet the necessary safety and regulatory requirements, electric personal aircraft could have applications in remote transport, disaster response and access to isolated communities. For now, however, HAPIDA SKYNeX remains a prototype rather than a commercially available flying car.
Further flight testing, technical validation and aviation approvals are needed before it can be considered for routine passenger use. Publicly reported details also do not establish a confirmed commercial launch date or a proven 40-kilometre operating range.Tamta's first test flight does not mean that mountain residents can yet replace a long road journey with a short flight. It does show that an idea developed over years of self-directed learning has progressed to an initial flight demonstration. For an innovator from Almora, that is a meaningful milestone. The larger challenge now is turning a machine that can fly briefly into one that can fly reliably and safely when people need it most.
