SEONGNAM — Seongnam Mayor Shin Sang-jin presented the city's future transport policies and its plans for international cooperation to cities across the Asia-Pacific region.
Shin introduced what he described as a people-centered transport policy in a video message delivered at the 15th Asian-Pacific City Summit (APCS) in Fukuoka, Japan, the previous day, the Seongnam city government said on the 21st.
The summit ran from the 19th to the 21st under the theme "Cooperation and Co-creation: Actions for Sustainable Cities." About 500 participants attended, including officials from cities across the Asia-Pacific region and from international organizations.
Participants discussed challenges that cities must address together, including building sustainable urban infrastructure, responding to low birth rates and population aging, and making cities more resilient to disasters.
Shin's message was screened as a pre-recorded video during the summit program on the 20th. In the video, he stressed the need to build a people-centered transport system that allows all residents to travel with ease.
The city used the occasion to outline its future mobility policies, including Mobility as a Service (MaaS), self-driving shuttles and mobility hubs.
Seongnam is laying the groundwork for an integrated transport service that links multiple modes of travel through a project to develop the city as a mobility-focused hub. The city plans to use the system to ease travel between its new towns and older districts and to expand transport services that residents can feel in their daily lives.
Seongnam also promoted the 17th Regional Environmentally Sustainable Transport (EST) Forum in Asia, which will be held at Seongnam City Hall from March 16 to 19 next year.
Shin asked officials from cities and international organizations to take an interest in the forum and to take part actively. The city plans to share its experience in sustainable transport policy and future mobility at the event.
It also plans to discuss practical cooperation with cities and international organizations in Asia and to broaden exchanges aimed at solving urban transport problems.
Seongnam said it will use its participation in the APCS to introduce its future transport policies to the international community and to strengthen the global networks needed to host a successful EST Forum in 2027.
