ESPN Faces Massive $1.7 Billion Bill for 24-Team College Football Playoff

College football is moving closer to another major postseason expansion, but doubling the College Football Playoff field could come with an enormous price tag for ESPN.

The network is expected to pay an additional $345 million annually over the next five years to broadcast a proposed 24-team playoff, according to ESPN's Pete Thamel. That would add approximately $1.725 billion to ESPN's existing financial commitment over that period.

The network already pays an average of $1.3 billion annually for College Football Playoff television rights, meaning its total yearly commitment could climb to approximately $1.645 billion.

However, ESPN could recover some of that additional spending through another significant change to college football's postseason.

Under the proposed expansion, conference championship games involving the SEC, ACC and Big 12 would be eliminated.

ESPN currently holds the television rights to those games, which cost the network approximately $140 million annually. Removing those broadcasts would effectively reduce ESPN's additional yearly spending from $345 million to approximately $205 million.

Over five years, that still represents more than $1 billion in additional net costs.

Fox, which owns the television rights to the Big Ten championship game, could also recover approximately $50 million annually if that contest is eliminated.

The financial details emerged as ESPN and the College Football Playoff reached a preliminary agreement to expand the postseason from 12 to 24 teams beginning with the 2027 season. However, the agreement is not finalized and still requires additional negotiations and approval from the parties involved.

The proposed format would include five automatic qualifying spots and 19 at-large selections. The eight highest-seeded teams would receive first-round byes, while the opening two rounds would be played on college campuses.

Expanding the playoff would create additional postseason opportunities for programs that might otherwise miss the current 12-team field.

It would also fundamentally change college football's calendar by eliminating traditional conference championship games in favor of a larger national tournament.

For ESPN, the expanded field represents a substantial financial investment in the future of college football.

The network could gain more high-profile postseason matchups, but securing those additional games would require spending hundreds of millions of dollars more each year.

With final approval still pending, college football's next major transformation is approaching, and ESPN appears prepared to pay a significant price to broadcast it.
