Delhi Police on Monday registered a case against Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, days after his dismissal as professor from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) following an enquiry into allegations of sexual harassment.
Sections pertaining to offences against women have been invoked against him, according to Delhi Police officials. The case was filed on the basis of a complaint lodged by the JNU administration.
The FIR has been registered under sections 75 (sexual harassment), 75(1) (physical contact and advances involving unwelcome and explicit sexual overtures), 75(1) (making sexually coloured remarks) and 79 (insult to modesty of a woman).
Akoijam, a professor at the Centre for the Study of Social Systems under JNU's School of Social Sciences, was dismissed with immediate effect on October 9 following an enquiry into sexual harassment allegations against him.
He has rejected the allegations against him. According to reports, at least 11 women students filed sexual harassment complaints against Akoijam in May this year.
The complainants claimed that he invited students to his campus residence on the pretext of meetings or gatherings and attempted to sexually harass them. Some students had also alleged that he made obscene and inappropriate remarks in class.
The police complaint against him was lodged by JNU's chief security officer, police said. An investigation has been taken up, officials added.
This came three days after Akoijam termed the action a "witch hunt" and claimed that he had not been given an opportunity to respond to the JNU internal committee's findings.
The women's wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) staged a protest outside the Lok Sabha MP outside the Congress headquarters in Delhi.
BJP Mahila Morcha workers in Bengaluru also staged a protest against the Congress MP in Bengaluru.
The BJP has demanded that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi immediately expel the accused MP from the party, ensure he resigns from Lok Sabha and apologise to the 11 students.
